On Sept. 24, Hillary Rodham Clinton received a surprise phone call from the man she’s often denounced as an economic know-nothing: John McCain. This was no social call, even though Clinton likes McCain enough to keeps his photo on the wall of her Senate office. The GOP nominee had already chatted with Bill Clinton about the mortgage crisis and wanted to pick the senator’s brain about her new proposal to have the federal government buy up bad mortgages and renegotiate terms more favorable to homeowners on verge of default. “McCain said he had been motivated by it, he was very...

Ever since Super Tuesday a super debate has been raging on FR concerning John McCain. I was never a McCain supporter, in fact I penned the post Super Tuesday post "Official FR Drinking Thread" so we could together drown our common disappointments into oblivion. FReepers seem to be moving into three distinct groups. The first are those that have always supported McCain, a lot or partially. There are those that don't like McCain but are willing to support him because they believe they will get some of what they want or to defeat what the see as the more critical...

McClinton Sticks to Calif. Recall Race By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: September 28, 2003 Filed at 6:48 p.m. ET SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- With little more than a week left in California's recall race, Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to make his victory seem inevitable. But his more conservative Republican rival isn't going away. State Sen. Tom McClintock has stuck firmly -- some say obstinately -- to his pledge to race to the end, even at the risk of splitting the Republican vote and allowing Democrats to stay in power even if Gov. Gray Davis is recalled.

Gray Davis and prolific political donors to both major parties in California, will launch television ads Friday to back Republican state Sen. Cruz Bustamante, the only major Democrat running to replace Davis.

Although they're not scheduled to formally debate until September 24, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock had the opportunity to engage in some verbal sparring Friday morning. The hosts of the "Armstrong and Getty" talk radio program, which airs on KSTE-AM in Sacramento, orchestrated a surprise on-air confrontation between the two candidates. McClintock entered the studio during a telephone interview with Schwarzenegger, and the two had their first public conversation since the campaign began. McClintock immediately took the offensive, asking Schwarzenegger to participate in a debate at the state Republican convention, which starts today and runs through Sunday. "We've got a...

The Kindergarten Candidate In a movie released in 1990, Arnold Schwarzenegger played big city undercover Detective John Kimble, who along with his partner Pheobe O'hara played by Pamela Reed, were sent to a school in Astoria, Oregon. Schwarzenegger's character was inserted into the school as a kindergarten teacher to find a paroled killer and drug dealer played by Colin Crisp. The Chrisp character's son Dominic was a pupil and his ex-wife played by Penelope Ann Miller was another teacher in the school. A significant part of the movie found Schwarzenegger's character dealing with young children under his charge, finally...

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush said on Wednesday that Arnold Schwarzenegger was not the only good candidate running in the California recall election and that he would use his visit to the state to "campaign for George W." and not the movie actor and former Mr. Universe.

In saying that other candidates in the race would make "a good governor," Bush appeared to distance himself from Schwarzenegger, who has taken an early lead in polls and is the most prominent among the 171 pending or certified candidates.

California's Corrupted Contracts At the height of California’s electricity purchases in March 2001, the Wall Street Journal quoted a trading floor manager for the Bonneville Power Administration. The expert was incredulous as he watched California traders bid on electricity, “at times offer(ing) to pay $50 to $100 per megawatt hour more than the available market price.” He said, “They agree to prices that make you wonder. You’d at least think they’d check to see what the prevailing price is before throwing out their offer.” At the same time, California officials were also committing consumers to long-term energy contracts at unprecedented...

CBS/AP) As state election officials unveiled a complicated system Monday for ranking the scores of candidates expected on California's recall ballot, some opponents pressed movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger to make his policy positions known. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports, more Democrats adopted the strategy of denouncing the recall on one hand, and campaigning for Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante — the leading Democrat in the race to replace Gov. Gray Davis — on the other. For his part, Davis slammed the recall election as an insult to voters. Visiting New York City, Schwarzenegger refused to take questions, fueling criticism that...

Arnold is no RonaldCal Thomas (archive) August 11, 2003 | Print | Send Ronald Reagan was an actor who became governor of California, so why not Arnold Schwarzenegger? Or so the argument goes. Why not actor Gary Coleman, then, or any of the other candidates for whom inexperience, not to mention cluelessness about what's needed to repair the damage done to the state's economy, seems to be their main qualification?President George Bush has endorsed Schwarzenegger, saying he would make a good governor. Based on what? The president couldn't possibly know what Schwarzenegger stands for, because no one else seems to...

Recalling California OrthopoxyI was recently reading some commentary the California Gubernatorial Recall Election, and came across this phrase: “a pox on the purists.” I thought a moment, and asked myself: which ones? The conservative purists, or the moderate purists? The principle purists, or the pragmatism purists? The grass roots purists, or the RNC purists? There is a deep disingenuousness among some Republicans and Freepers on these matters. Their a priori position is that their world view represents "realism," therefore any other view is invalid. They argue from presumption and castigate those who differ, while failing to understand they are as...
