<p>The GOP party chairman wants to let the public decide on a tax hike.</p> <p>One day after the Oregon Legislature passed a revenue-raising package and signaled an end to its longest session, Republican Party Chairman Kevin Mannix announced an effort to send the measure to voters.</p>

Oregon Republicans will gather for their annual Dorchester Conference this weekend without a challenger for U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, the Democratic incumbent. Wyden is quietly heading toward the 2004 election with more than $1 million in the bank. He’s left footprints through every county in the state and carries a reputation for bipartisanship only made stronger by Republican Sen. Gordon Smith’s re-election campaign last year. The annual GOP gathering in Seaside will give the party faithful a chance to cheer Smith’s re-election, celebrate their control of the state House and figure out how President Bush can win Oregon next year....

Five weeks after losing a tight race for Oregon governor, Kevin Mannix resurfaced Wednesday as the sudden odds-on favorite to become chairman of a state Republican Party divided by a bitter leadership fight. The party's current chairman, Perry Atkinson, and his chief rival, Lynn Snodgrass -- recruited for the post by Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore. -- both dropped out of the race and said they would support Mannix. It was an amazing end to July. Kevin Mannix, the Republican candidate for Oregon governor said that those employees whose retirement plan losses at PGE were due to the shenanigans at parent company ENRON, should receive compensation from the state. If you live in Oregon, that would be from you. (The money the state spends comes out of your pocket.) So far, it looks like it will be a very close race between Kevin Mannix and Ron Saxton for the Republican gubernatoria nomination. Roberts is trailing a bit behind the other two. Sadly, it looks like Susan Castillo, the union thug candidate will get a majority to take the Superintendent of Public Instruction position.
