Hal Kempfer, a noted international security expert, is getting a roomful of California public health officials and emergency responders to think about the unthinkable – a nuclear bomb exploding at the port of Long Beach, about four miles away...News out of North Korea has created a mini-bonanza for local manufacturers of nuclear fallout shelters. But more important to the vast bulk of the population, Kempfer says, is having some rudimentary knowledge of what it means to “shelter in place"...Sandy Wedgeworth, the public health emergency management coordinator, said she and her staff felt energized, not depressed, by what they learned from...

Wrong, wrong, wrong. And psychologically interesting, as an examination of ideological priors. But mostly wrong. The New York Times has an answer to the question raised by the fires in Los Angeles, and, uh. So here’s how they frame the problem: The city of Los Angeles, with a population of 3.8 million, is one of 88 different cities that make up the county of Los Angeles. That county, with a population of 9.6 million spread across 4,751 square miles stretching inland from the Pacific Ocean, is controlled by a five-person board of supervisors, each one representing 1.9 million people. Each...

Known as the Palos Verdes fault zone, the system runs deep beneath the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It previously was thought to be a segmented network of smaller faults, but a closer look by scientists at Harvard University suggests it’s a system of interconnected, closely spaced planar fractures stretching from the Santa Monica Bay to the waters off Dana Point. The analysis determined the fault system, which runs beneath numerous neighborhoods as well as the ports of Long Beach and L.A., has a much larger surface area that could rupture in the same seismic event, making it capable of a far...

The Democrats are pretending COVID is the entire problem, but the issue is also California’s cockamamie environmental and employment laws. I’ve lived in California for nearly 50 years, certainly long enough to know the state is wacko. It’s become a self-immolating mess, with policies growing more disastrous as the years go by. SNIP A few things, it seems to me, have played a part in the current crisis: Back in 2008, the state passed some onerous air quality legislation, that mandated truck engines be “upgraded” by certain dates. It was a gradual process, but older engines were simply not going...

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned that the devastating global supply chain troubles that continue to be a drag on the economy and threaten gift giving during the holiday season could continue as long as the coronavirus pandemic. “There are definitely going to continue to be issues, especially as long as the pandemic continues, right? If you have, for example, the third largest container port in the world in China shutting down because of a COVID outbreak in late summer, you’ll feel that in the fall here on the West Coast,” Buttigieg told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.”

The Biden administration on Thursday announced the deadline for his private employer vaccine mandate, raising serious questions about how the rule will exacerbate the supply chain crisis. According to RealClearPolitics’ Tom Bevan, there is no exemption for the trucking industry and there will likely be drivers who quit over the mandate. “So all the biggest trucking companies in America - who already face major driver shortages - will see a % of their workforce quit. Supply chain crisis is going to get much worse - very soon,” he warned. Bevan noted that a significant percentage of drivers are unvaccinated, which...
