Minnesota has been hit with a devastating bird flu outbreak as the state prepares to provide much of the nation with turkeys for Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, officials announced Minnesota’s first major outbreak of bird flu in 2023. Minnesota is America’s largest producer of turkeys. State officials said Wednesday that a flock of 140,000 turkeys was killed at a Meeker County farm. The cull was commenced to mitigate the further spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), according to the Star Tribune. HPAI, or bird flu, has seen a terrifying level of spread around the globe in the last few...

For those that missed the posting, Carlo Morelli passed away January 10 2021. I thought that I would post a thread that links to many of the great Thanksgiving and Christmas threads posted through the years by many FReepers.

Finding the right turkey gravy recipe for Thanksgiving is no joke. Deeply savory, unctuous, and rich, there’s a solid chance it’s going to be drizzled on literally everything you serve. That’s why knocking your homemade turkey gravy out of the park is absolutely essential. And lucky for you, this list is here to help. The best turkey gravy recipe typically calls for turkey drippings and stock—with added aromatics for flavor and a starch to thicken things up. Fat from the turkey (and usually some added butter) binds to the starch to create a creamy roux that can be a canvas...

Processed goods like jelly or gravy could be unavailable in NI at the end of the protocol grace period, according to Stormont's agriculture minister. Edwin Poots acknowledged Northern Ireland has plenty of homegrown produce, such as beef or potatoes. But he warned trimmings like Bisto or trifle could be missing from traditional Sunday dinners. He also stood by his claim that action was needed to avert "a major crisis" over food supplies. However, political opponents have accused him of scaremongering. Mr Poots said the official minute of a meeting he held with suppliers - at which he was told of...

While the food is always the real ‘centerpiece’ of the Thanksgving table, décor can make any occasion more special and memorable. A recent newsletter recently led me to a really beautiful website, ‘Freutcake’, which had this unique idea for place ‘cards’ or holders at the table. The mini dried Indian Corn is available from dried botanical suppliers, and perhaps in your grocery florist area or local garden store; but you can also find them in pet stores, where they are sold in bags as a treat/enrichment for small pets. (And if you’re not into gilding things, they would be charming...

Bland gravy doesn't have to be a thing this ThanksgivingIIf on Thanksgiving you find yourself with a pot of bland gravy, try something a little different instead of simply reaching for more salt. Add umami-rich ingredients to punch up your gravy. We know umami brings “savoriness” to your tongue, but what exactly makes a food umami rich? The answer is a food high in glutamates (a type of amino acid), which are responsible for the rich, addictive taste found in cured meats, aged cheeses, fish and other foods we associate with umami. We aren’t suggesting you add a piece of...

Sen. Mark Begich can still return to the Senate.Even though lawmakers who will not be returning to Congress in January might feel downtrodden, they can find solace in the fact that they retain some congressional perks. Those perks, ranging from floor access to permanent identification cards, were outlined in the Congressional Research Service’s Dec. 5 report titled “Selected Privileges and Courtesies Extended to Former Members of Congress.” CRS American National Government specialist R. Eric Peterson wrote in the report, “Some [privileges] are derived from law and chamber rules, but others are courtesies that have been extended as a matter of...

A troop of turkeys goes house-hunting in Berkeley While the suburban residents of Concord try to deal with that wayward camel at commute time, the folks in quiet Albany are battling their own random creatures. We came across this fun news item this morning from CBS, which explains how a dozen or so wild turkeys are overrunning the small town of Albany with their annoying gobbles, clucks, and cackles. Interestingly enough, the turkey troops showed up after Thanksgiving and have overstayed their welcome. Parents are worried these wild birds will try to take on their children (sounds like a Stephen...

TSA offers holiday travel guidelines: No gravy in carry-onsBy Alexandra Jaffe - 11/22/12 04:21 PM ET Holiday travelers cannot bring certain Thanksgiving food favorites on planes, according to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines that ban the carrying of food items ranging from cranberry sauce to gravy. In a post Thursday on the TSA's blog, agency blogger Bob Burns warns holiday travelers to pack liquids, including "gravy, jams, jellies, maple syrup, oils and vinegars, sauces, soups, wine, liquor and beer," in their checked bags. "Eggnog can be an alternate to fuel depending on who’s mixing it. Sometimes there’s a fine line...

SAS soldiers who ran out of camouflage cream have been on secret missions — smeared in GRAVY. Our elite troops found the meat sauce worked as a skin-darkener after one soldier spilt it on his arm in the mess room. They have nabbed 100 suspected insurgents during raids in the Iraq capital of Baghdad this month — while smelling like roast dinners. Bisto granules are now used regularly instead of MoD-issued Fast Tan. An SAS source said: “Surveillance is very difficult in Iraq. We go to great lengths to change our appearance. “We use cream to darken our face, dye...

Scientists at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have identified why it is good for us to consume large quantities of tomatoes - and say that the best way to eat them is cooked up with some olive oil and cheese. Scientists have long believed that the carotenoids found in fruits and vegetables have a cancer preventive effect. In particular, studies have found that as the consumption of tomato products increases, risk of certain types of cancer decreases - even more so than when a variety of vegetables are eaten. Over the years, studies have found that the risk of up...

'Yes, there were calls from the London bomb suspects to Saudi Arabia, but to describe my country as the crucible of terror is insulting' By Andrew Alderson (Filed: 07/08/2005) When Prince Turki al-Faisal was app-ointed as Saudi Arabia's ambassador to London, he must have thought that his 24-year watch on some of the world's most deadly terrorists had finally come to an end. The quietly spoken diplomat, who is the nephew of the late King Fahd and the new King Adbullah, was head of his kingdom's intelligence service from 1977 to 2001 and, as such, was responsible for trying to...
