I would like to know HOW an article of a journalist could write a report of 1,000 words, and never get to the question we all ask. DID THIS WOMAN GET THE VACCINE. It is the FIRST thing that comes to mind when we see these stories, and they keep avoiding the obvious.

The debate over campaign contributions is never-ending for a simple reason: Both sides of the argument have merit.

On the one hand, of course money is speech. For most citizens, contributing to politicians or causes is the most effective way to augment and amplify speech with which they agree. The most disdainful dismissers of this argument are editorialists and incumbent politicians who — surprise! — already enjoy access to vast audiences and don’t particularly like their monopoly being invaded by the unwashed masses or the self-made plutocrat.

When Jack Hagerty closed on his new condo three weeks ago, he thought it had everything he wanted: a quiet, safe Glen Park location, easy access to BART and a backyard for his 10-year-old son. Turns out it came with an extra feature - a self-described "leather sex" enthusiast living downstairs. Not that there's anything wrong with that. "He's entitled to his life," Hagerty said. "I just wish he'd told me sooner." Hagerty said all was well until he announced that he intended to remove the carpet and padding in his unit to help with allergies. The downstairs condo owner...
  • CA: Full disclosure, please - Air Resources Board resists complete audit (CARB 'Choking'?)

Just how transparent is the work of unelected staff members of the Air Resources Board as they prepare to micromanage California's private economy with as-yet unwritten regulations to curb global warming? Already, the state Air Resources Board is being challenged about how it has spent $57 million of tax money advanced by the Legislature to implement 2006's Global Warming Solutions Act, which ambitiously – and we feel unnecessarily – aims to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The ARB contends every dime is fully accounted for in a 141-page summary of 50,000 documents that show where the money has been spent to...

This author is the Nelson Poynter Scholar for Journalism Values It's one of the age-old debates in journalism circles. Can a journalist tell a lie to reveal the bad behavior of others? Or, put another way, when might a journalist obscure the truth of his identity in pursuit of the truth on a story? It's more than an academic exercise when a journalist chooses to use the deception tool. You'll find a very personal take on this in a recent essay in the Los Angeles Times. The writer is Ken Silverstein, who once wrote for that paper and is now...
  • James Taranto Outs Himself (Again)

In a classic example of misleading by omission, OpinionJournal.com editor James Taranto’s bio states, "He attended California State University, Northridge." In a commentary about Marilee Jones, who had lied to her bosses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology about her educational credentials for 28 years, Taranto belatedly fills in the blanks: I left high school after my sophomore year; and although I spent several years in college, I never bothered to graduate. Noting that "[b]y all accounts Marilee Jones did an excellent job," Taranto brushes aside the central issue in her dismissal - "[o]stensibly Ms. Jones was forced out because she...

Contact: Uniting A Better America Re-election Foundation Office of The Director of Public InformationWashington DC info@ubarf.org Bold, decisive steps were taken today by War Hero and Senator from Massachusetts, John Forbes Kerry. He and his untold millions of admirers have decided to use the plain unvarnished truth to stifle the yammering hordes of the VRWC. I.E., the Truth about the Senator's outstanding service to his country in the Navy, during the VietNam Era. The War Hero and Senator signed the DoD Form 180, releasing as many of his records as necessary to settle this issue once and for all. In...

DURING THE MOST RECENT PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN, various antagonists repeatedly urged John Kerry to sign a Standard Form 180; by signing Form 180, Kerry would have released the entirety of his military records for public consumption. The senator stubbornly refused these pleas. (Actually he "stubbornly refused" in a uniquely Kerry-esque manner. While he kept promising to sign the form and get the information out there, he never quite managed to do so.) During Kerry's appearance on Meet the Press almost four months ago, Tim Russert once again broached the issue of Kerry signing a Form 180. As he did during the...

SPANISH business leaders are being told they have to declare any illicit love affairs - to the stock market. In an attempt to crack down on insider trading, the directors of companies quoted on Spain’s stock exchange will have to come clean, on a twice-yearly basis, about anyone with whom they are having an "affectionate relationship". In July, legislation will be brought in by the regulatory body, the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV), to try to clean up the image of Spanish business practices. Privileged information about share prices, takeovers and company results is frequently leaked from the...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger defended his campaign finance organization as completely open and above board Tuesday and promised to disclose all donors to any of his political committees.

Along with six political action committees, Schwarzenegger has also recently incorporated a private nonprofit corporation to help oversee his fund-raising. While some political watchdogs have characterized the organization as confusing to most voters, the governor said in an interview that each committee is necessary to meet state laws.
