JD Vance had a surprisingly awkward time ordering two dozen donuts and chatting with the workers at a local shop, not only illustrating his basic weirdness but standing in cringey contrast to the naturally friendly Tim Walz at a Runza in Nebraska. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is evidently distressed by the surge in support for Kamala Harris and appears to be wearing out his welcome even on Fox.

Soft and sugary, it has spurred the spirits of World War One soldiers on the front lines. Warm and doughy, it has earned the adulation of Homer Simpson, the main character of America's longest-running animated TV series. Heart-shaped and jelly-filled, it has even been used to honour the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding. And every 2 June since 1938, we celebrate it - the donut or doughnut - on National Donut Day in the US

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie predicted Donald Trump will be indicted in at least one of the several investigations he faces ahead of the 2024 presidential campaign. In an interview with Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday, Christie said he didn’t think Trump’s legal team would be able to dismiss the Georgia case over the grand jury foreperson’s conduct. But he said “I still have a hard time believing” Trump will be indicted for attempting to pressure Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger into finding enough votes to swing the state in his favor during the 2020 election: This is a...

We are celebrating the season with two special holiday episodes of Pastries with Paola before season two launches in the spring. First up is Paola's holiday showstopper, the Old Fashioned Doughnut Croquembouche. This tower of doughnuts is held together with amber caramel and adorned with spun sugar and gold leaf– the perfect finishes for this wow-worthy dessert. Made popular in France in Paris in the late 18th century,...

It looked like closing time at the county fair or the week before Christmas at the mall: cars just sitting there, bumper to bumper, waiting their turn to inch along. Dozens of vehicles lined up and down the aisles of the parking lot, honking as if every single driver in front of them was staring at their cellphone while stopped at a green light. It sounded like the traffic jam of the century. But, in fact, it was the Krispy Kreme drive-through at 1:30 a.m. in Dublin — the first to open in the country. The Dublin location opened Sept....

SACRAMENTO -- Four days after 22-year-old Stephon Clark was shot and killed by police officers in his grandparents' backyard, protesters gathered inside and outside Sacramento City Hall. Officers believed Clark had been breaking into cars in the neighborhood and shot him because they say they thought he had a gun. He was only holding a cellphone. "The death of one more man of color is one too many," Mayor Darrell Steinberg said earlier Thursday before the protest began. Protesters clogged major downtown Sacramento streets near City Hall as the Thursday commute was about to begin. Earlier in the day, the...

A man who choked to death at a Voodoo Doughnuts shop in Denver was reportedly trying to wolf down a giant doughnut during a food-eating challenge. Travis Malouff, 42, died Sunday while attempting to down a half-pound glazed doughnut. The cause of death was "asphyxia, due to obstruction of the airway," the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner said Monday morning. Malouff was taking the shop's "Tex-Ass Challenge," which requires participants to consume the colossal doughnut — the equivalent of six regular doughnuts — within an 80-second time limit. Winners get a free meal and a button.

THESSALONIKI – It took an undercover operation, but Greek police have blown a hole in a ring of alleged crooks who had cornered the doughnut market in a beach resort. So an undercover officer posed as a doughnut seller, police said Tuesday, and he was attacked, leading to the arrest of the three aggressive doughnut sellers.

An invasive species of mussel called quagga has recently begun eating its way through the phytoplankton population of Lake Michigan, which could have dire effects on the lake's ecosystem, scientists now warn. A giant ring of phytoplankton (microscopic plants such as algae) was discovered in Lake Michigan in 1998 by Michigan Technological Universitybiologist W. Charles Kerfoot and his research team. The "phytoplankton doughnut" is formed when winter storms kick up nutrient-rich sediment along the southeastern shore of the lake. The disturbed sediments begin circulating in a slow-moving circle with the lake's currents, which provides a massive supply of food for...

DOUGHNUTS are a better symbol for Easter than the traditional egg, says a leading Tasmanian churchman. The Anglican Dean of Hobart, Richard Humphrey, said he preferred the idea of the Easter doughnut over the traditional Easter egg. "Eggs don't really have anything to do with Easter but you can attach some rich symbolism to a doughnut," he said. "They're round like the stone that was rolled away from Jesus's tomb, the tomb was empty, just like the hole in the doughnut, they're shaped like a halo and the circle represents eternal life." Doughnuts were served in St David's Cathedral yesterday...
