Army Reservist Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, who was known among colleagues for sporting a "Hitler mustache," was demoted and discharged after he was charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday. “This was a knee-jerk reaction to the charges,” Jonathan Crisp, Hale-Cusanelli’s attorney, told the Post. Hale-Cusanelli is the first known discharge from the military due to charges in connection with the assault. Crisp called the June less-than-honorable discharge “improper,” citing his client’s inability to defend himself due to his incarceration and inability to make comments without violating his Fifth Amendment rights in the Capitol...

….The details of the charges against Whelan from a special court-martial that resulted in his discharge for bad conduct two years later add to an increasingly complex picture of the 48-year-old former Marine, whom Russian officials have accused of spying. A group of gay troops and veterans says 261 service members were discharged under “don’t ask, don’t tell” in 2010. President Obama signed the law repealing the military’s policy that barred gays from serving openly in the military in December. But before, Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued a directive in October making it more difficult for service members to be discharged under the rule. Alexander Nicholson, the executive director of Servicemembers United, said though the numbers are at an all-time low, last year’s tally is unusually high considering Gates’s mid-year directive. "Despite this law clearly being on its deathbed at...

MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO (March 31, 2006) -- When Hurricane Katrina hit his home town of New Orleans, Pfc. Eric J. Brown, Platoon 2061, Company E, thought he lost his chance, once again, to become a Marine. Brown was originally sent to boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., the training facility designated for most male recruits from east of the Mississippi River and all female recruits. During a medical re-evaluation at Parris Island, it was discovered that after several duck hunting trips without hearing protection, Brown damaged his hearing to a point that was...

Ok, I'm sorry if this is a silly thread, but I'm looking for advice on the legalities of a situation and I'm not sure where to go. I figured there are a lot of freepers here who are pretty darn smart and combined with experiences, could offer some help... Basically a big known company (name withheld) my husband worked for just sent a letter saying that they over paid him by $192 and are requesting it to be paid back. He hasn't worked there since September 2005 and they are just now sending us this letter. Do they have a...

CINCINNATI -- An Army sergeant from Ohio who was wounded in Iraq and wanted to remain in the military as an openly gay soldier was officially discharged Tuesday, according to an advocacy group. Stout, of Utica in central Ohio, told The Associated Press in April that he wanted to remain in the military and be openly gay, but that would conflict with the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't...
