A college student was injured after a police officer's gun accidentally fired inside a sandwich shop in Brooklyn Wednesday.

The officer stopped at a Blimpie store in Flatbush on his way to work. While he was eating, his gun slipped off of his waistband and fired a shot, according to police.

The bullet hit the ground, police said, fragments of the floor tile hit the 19-year-old student.

She was treated and released from an area hospital.

Gun accidentally fires in restaurant, hurting woman

"The officer was treated at Beth Israel for trauma"

Being a klutz must be traumatic, but more so for bystanders. Put some ice on it!

This sounds strange. Most modern firearms won't go off when dropped. It is a safety feature built into them called a hammer block. Maybe he was carrrying an old oudated piece, like a 1911A1 cocked and locked, even then....

What a misleading title. Give me a BREAK! One, it was a purely accidental discharge, and an unusual one at that since the gun apparently fired from striking the ground. In addition to that, the student wasn't SHOT as the title suggests. All the injury could have involved was some tiny scratches or punctures from pieces of the tile that broke.

What a non-story. Why did it even make news?!?! National news?!? Give me a break.

Somewhat fishy. Every modern, good quality handgun has redundant safeties to guard against this mishap, especially duty guns of a big city PD. Maybe an old or cheap 3rd world piece but I doubt it would be approved carry by the PD. Just sounds like there's more to the story.

Somewhere, John Kerry is very upset. "That could have been my fourth Purple Heart! It should have been me!"

He probably made a grab for it in mid-fall and accidently pulled the trigger.

If that's really true, Blimpie's must be really pi$$poor.

I agree, this shouldn't happen with any modern handgun I know of. I can't think of any that would discharge upon being dropped, unless it was cocked. Why would and officer be carrying a "cocked" handgun?

I read the newspaper article and it said nothing about it being dropped. I suspect the officer was carrying a M1911 style 45 ACP. Those are single action only semiautos. They are kept holstered with the hammer back. Generally, the trigger safety is on. If he forget to set the safety, it could possible discharge if pressure was put on it in the correct way. This would require the grip safety to be depressed and about 3 pounds of pressure on the trigger.

Adolescents sometimes have "accidental discharges" and sometimes they don't ~ what's going on here is a cop had a junk piece loaded with faulty ammo, thereby proving that when government artificially intervenes in the market place (in this case the one for guns), results are distorted, sometimes disastrously so!
