The state budget that Gov. Jon Corzine unveiled yesterday calls for the elimination of property tax deductions on state income taxes next year, raising about $420 million to help offset spending. For middle-class New Jerseyans, however, the missing deduction could pack an extra punch: They also would lose their property tax rebates under the governor's proposal for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The $29.8 billion proposal represents "tough choices to do the right thing," Corzine told a joint session of the Legislature. As he promised to protect children, the elderly and the working poor, the governor asked others to...

Renters earning less than $50,000 will share in the same property tax relief package homeowners are expected to get in the next year, Gov. Jon Corzine said yesterday. Corzine, speaking at an anti-poverty forum, also said he would support expanding the state rental assistance program and consider limiting how often affluent communities may sell off their legal obligations to build affordable housing in cities strapped for cash. Without rental subsidies and more housing opportunities in suburbs closer to jobs, thousands of people will continue to struggle, he said.

UL. 5 8:54 A.M. ET New Jersey's casinos ushered the last of the gamblers away from slot machines and tables Wednesday, and janitors locked the doors behind them as a state government shutdown claimed its latest victims. In the first mass closure in the 28-year history of Atlantic City's legalized gambling trade, all 12 casinos were under state orders to lock up. Atlantic City's casinos are lucrative for New Jersey. They have a $1.1 billion payroll, and the state takes an 8 percent cut -- an estimated $1.3 million a day. But as a stalemate over the state budget entered...

Interested in an aging sedan that was once part of the state of New Jersey's mighty fleet? Gov. Jon Corzine has a deal for you. Advertisement The Democratic governor, stressing belt-tightening in the midst of a state budget battle, kicked off a fire sale of 809 used cars he says will shrink the number of state passenger vehicles to 9,995. Corzine announced a series of Saturday summer auctions starting July 8 he hopes will bring in up to $1 million. He said the state will save another $1 million a year on fuel and maintenance costs by cutting its fleet...

Here is an email I recieved from NJGOP Chairman Tom Wilson. I can confirm that the blocs are shifting towards Forrester. If the GOP has strong turnout and the conservatives show up Doug will win. I am a conservative and diagree with Doug on social issues but agreeing on economic policy and reform and not voting for another sleezy corrupt NJ Politician is enough for me. My fellow Republican: I want to thank you for all your support and effort over the past ten months. With less than 36 hours to go until the polls close, public opinion surveys are...

I spend a lot of time reading children's books these days. One of my daughter's favorites is the story of a fish who is ostracized until he learns to share. Another encourages wee ones to say "Excuse Me!" after they burp. I've yet to find a fable about a rich guy who buys his buddies, a U.S. Senate seat and, when he gets bored, bids on the Governor's Office. That book is being written. Goldman Sachs & The Seven Dwarfs, by Jon Corzine, should be released by Election Day, at the latest. It seems like only yesterday that Corzine, the...
