Dangerous gameBashing our southern neighbours might have dire consequencesBy Paul JacksonThe contemptuous tone taken by Liberal leader Paul Martin in his anti-American ranting unveils a side of our supposed prime minister that's been previously shielded to most voters. It is he will do anything -- no matter how low, no matter how politically unethical, no matter how dangerous -- to try to score points and eke out extra seats in the House of Commons come voting day Jan. 23. His shrill and silly accusations against President George W. Bush's administration may make for good theatre with the uniformed, but they...

OTTAWA/SURREY, British Columbia (Reuters) - The United States made an unprecedented foray into Canada's election campaign on Tuesday, warning politicians not to bash Washington in their bid to win the January 23 election. But an unapologetic Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin responded immediately by saying "c'est la vie" -- that's life -- if the United States did not like his remarks, and he would not accept anyone telling him he cannot defend his country. In a hard-hitting speech in Ottawa, U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins lamented what he called relentless and incessant criticism of his country, which he speculated might begin...

NDP Leader Jack Layton called for an immediate halt to sending more Canadian troops to Afghanistan, warning that Canada must not "drift into a war blindly." "We appear to be drifting from our original mission there – which was to provide security in the capital region – and into a combat role side-by-side with American troops," Layton said in a statement. Layton's announcement follows NATO's approval of a plan to send up to 6,000 troops into southern Afghanistan in a major expansion of their mission. "We must not drift into a war blindly or secretly, on the say-so of one...

OTTAWA (CP) — Travel to Canada fell to its lowest level in nearly a year in June, mainly because fewer Americans were making same-day car trips north of the border, Statistics Canada reports. A slight drop in the number of American visitors more than offset a gain in travel from overseas countries, which rose for a seventh consecutive month. A total of 3.1 million people visited Canada in June, down 0.1 per cent from May. Just over 2.7 million Americans visited, down 0.4 per cent from a month earlier. There were 398,000 overseas visitors, up 1.6 per cent from May.
