OTTAWA (CP) Travel to Canada fell to its lowest level in nearly a year in June, mainly because fewer Americans were making same-day car trips north of the border, Statistics Canada reports.
A slight drop in the number of American visitors more than offset a gain in travel from overseas countries, which rose for a seventh consecutive month.
A total of 3.1 million people visited Canada in June, down 0.1 per cent from May.
Just over 2.7 million Americans visited, down 0.4 per cent from a month earlier.
There were 398,000 overseas visitors, up 1.6 per cent from May.
"One local councillor waved a $5 dollar bill in front of camera crews from both Windsor and Detroit telling the Americans to take the next bus out of town."
And then?
"Now they walk around muttering to themselves what has happened to the economy of the city especially downtown. "
Of course the fashionable explanations are still stronger Canadian dollars and long lines for immigration clearances at the borders. But it doesn't quite explain everything as some other countries do have an upsurge in American tourist numbers.
Well Canadians, you told the Yanks not to come, and they said "Be my guest!" and you now wonder why your economy suffer?
New Zealand and Australia are two of the few places I dream of visiting some day.
Could the high price of gasoline be partly to blame for fewer "day trips"? (Maybe not so much in the Detroit area, but more like Alberta and BC)
"Could the high price of gasoline be partly to blame for fewer "day trips"?"
I'd lay the blame upon several years of highly public anti-Americanism.
To establish this, we need to have data for the number of domestic day trips compared with cross-border day trips. If there is no drop in domestic trips, then it is obviously the beef with Canada.
But we haven't got the domestic trip data here.

Why would Americans want to miss out on a country with so many great tourist attractions?
Boggles the mind.
Go to Australia. This country is like a mini version of Ontario in the South Pacific. (People are mostly outright extreme leftists, sleeping sheeples, or trade-with-everyone "libertarians")
American beer (Sierra Nevada, Red Seal, Sam Adams) and maple syrup (NY) taste better.
It just seems that a monthly drop of 0.4% is statistically insignificant. I personnally wouldn't read too much into this statistical noise. I do know that I probably won't be going to the Great White North any time soon because of their hurtful rhetoric lately.
We use to visit BC at least 2 times a year, but after the last few visits, we've decided to spend our money here in the states. I get tired of hearing and reading anti American sentiment, we are limiting our travel outside of The United States.
We Yanks have long memories.
WOW! That elephant is HUGE. I better start mapping out my next vacation!
It's not just the negative attitude, I'm just not sure I can keep my mouth shut. :-)
(Everything FReepers think is probably a "hate thought" in Canada.)
Why would anyone want to go on vacation from a country with freedom of speech and religion to a country without freedom of speech and freedom of religion?
How lon before that cesspool north of the border implodes?
Canadian beer is stronger though. Their average beer would be called 'malt liquor' here.
Of course the Canucks are clueless. They said "Be my guest don't don't come and pollute our country!" (at least on Ontario and Quebec). Well, you did what you promised and now their US tourist figures dropped.
That's a good one mate.
Uh...I heard they got really well-manicured lawns (and cheap drugs).
Then my home brew would be classified as a cocktail! :)
You can go to Australia to visit well manicured lawns as well. As to cheap drugs, sorry but they are not to be sold to Americans.
