Well, to put it bluntly, this sucks. I was in our local Aldi store earlier today and they were in the midst of going to all digital pricing. That is, there's essentially a bar code on the shelf under each group of boxes of items, or under the 2% milk rack, etc., which you scan with a smart phone to get the price. No printed prices are on the shelves, and won't be, according to the employee I spoke with.

Major corporations in Texas and Mississippi are reassuring their customers they will continue to enforce mask mandates and other CDC guidelines in reaction to the state governors’ recent announcements. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott led the way, and Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves followed soon after, by repealing state-wide mask mandates and lifting lockdown orders on Tuesday. The new state guideliness give businesses the green light to return to 100% capacity. The following 13 major corporations have already released statements or responded to inquiries that confirm their mask mandates and other coronavirus guidelines will continue to be in force despite states lifting...

According to the FDA, there is a multi-state outbreak of Cyclospora infections potentially linked to salads containing those ingredients. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can affect the intestinal tract and cause diarrhea. It is treated with antibiotics. As a result, Giant Eagle, Walmart and Aldi have issued recalls for several Fresh Express salad products. Customers should throw those products away immediately. The recalled products are clearly marked with the letter “Z” at the beginning of the Product Code, which is located on the upper right-hand corner of the front of the package. Those products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage...

With Cub, Target, two Aldi stores and many small markets damaged by rioting over the past week, Longfellow and about eight other neighborhoods have nearly become a food desert. “I consider the loss of these businesses devastating,” said Melanie Majors, executive director of the Longfellow Community Council. “Besides just the food, there’s a lack of retail for diapers, formula, household goods, even clothing.” Many residents of the area shop lower-priced stores such as Aldi or dollar stores. Two of those dollar stores — including Family Dollar on Lake Street — were destroyed in last week’s looting and violence that arose...

North Carolina: Driver deliberately hits and kills 79-year-old woman, tries to hit four others in “random” attack OCT 22, 2019 12:00 PM BY ROBERT SPENCER Police “have not revealed a motive in the case.” In light of the fact that “there is no known connection between Alshabani and any of the victims,” is it possible that this was vehicular jihad attack? Sawan Ibrahim Alshabani’s surname is common in Saudi Arabia. And the Islamic State issued this call in September 2014: So O muwahhid, do not let this battle pass you by wherever you may be. You must strike the soldiers,...

Competition in the U.S. grocery sector is about to get more fierce. Discount grocery chain Aldi is expected to unveil on Monday plans to invest $5 billion to open nearly 900 stores and remodel hundreds more in the U.S. The expansion, over the next five years, puts the German grocer on track to becoming the third-largest food retailer in the U.S. by store count, behind the larger Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kroger Co., and a growing threat to traditional food retailers. Aldi said it is expected to have a total of 2,500 locations across the U.S. by 2022. Its plan...

Aldi and Lidl, Germany’s toughest discount food retailers, are invading the US. Both operate small, efficient no frill self serve supermarkets with a strong non-food assortment, and very low prices. Both have permanently changed the competitive landscape wherever they have gone. Lidl is about to open its U.S. headquarter in Arlington, Virginia and a distribution center in Alamance County, North Carolina. These are early steps in its U.S. invasion by this formidable company that operates about 11,000 stores in 26 countries throughout Europe. I am told that the company has already selected 80 locations in the Greater Washington, D.C. area...

Columbia County, Ark. — There’s no sign of it here in Magnolia, Ark., but the boycott season is upon us, and graduates of Princeton and Bryn Mawr are demanding “justice” from Wal-Mart, which is not in the justice business but in the groceries, clothes, and car-batteries business. It is easy to scoff, but I am ready to start taking the social-justice warriors’ insipid rhetoric seriously — as soon as two things happen: First, I want to hear from the Wal-Mart-protesting riffraff a definition of “justice” that is something that does not boil down to “I Get What I Want, Irrespective...

The shirts drew criticism on Twitter where the supermarket was accused of racism for seeming to say Australia was only established after it was colonised in 1788, despite the existence of an Indigenous population before then. In a statement Aldi Australia said it had decided to remove...

Chances are that you have never set foot inside the best grocery store in America: Aldi. And even if you are lucky enough to be in one of the 32 states where Aldi is, perhaps you were put-off by the cardboard boxes in lieu of shelves, or the row upon row of suspicious-looking off-brands. What is this place? Why do I have to put down a deposit to check out a cart? What is the weird giant shelf by the exit? And what do you mean, I have to pay for a bag? Calm your hormones, meine Schatzis: Aldi, which...
