Popular grocery store chain Aldi announced on September 4 that it is raising its minimum wage to $18 and $23 an hour due to the company’s growth.
Aldi’s press release further noted that it is looking to hire more than 13,000 store and warehouse workers nationwide as the holidays approach and the company opens additional stores.
The announcement continued:
Known for its commitment to competitive compensation, the new national average starting wages for open ALDI store and warehouse positions will be $18 and $23 per hour, respectively, based on market and position.
At ALDI, those working more than 30 hours a week have access to healthcare insurance, paid time off and more. In 2023, the retailer also introduced new perks in response to employee feedback, including flexible scheduling and 100% paid parental and caregiver leave.
It is important to note that

that’s nearly $50,000 a year working as a bagger or stockboy... *sigh* look for inflation to keep going up
Reading this I figure Aldi’s prices would go up
We shop Aldi’s because they have good prices.
This will definitely raise prices.
We may shop elsewhere from now on.................
I shop American. Publix.
I love my Aldi...Got organic 80/20 ground beef for $3.99/lb a couple weeks back. Froze several pkgs..
When I started working as a teenager, min. wage was $2.75/hour. I got paid $3.00/hour and I thought it was a good job and that the boss was generous.
In the words of Murray Rothbard: What Has Government Done to Our Money?
“At ALDI, those working more than 30 hours a week have access to healthcare insurance, paid time off and more. In 2023, the retailer also introduced new perks in response to employee feedback, including flexible scheduling and 100% paid parental and caregiver leave.”
The market sets the price and the price for a grocery store worker is at least $23.00 plus good benefits.
and everyone more experienced than a bag boy will demand to earn more than them!
Ok, the Aldi workers get paid higher wages and Aldi food prices then go higher to pay the higher wages.
Nobody wins in an inflationary environment. Prices will also exceed people’s income.
Aldi doesn’t have bagboys.Customers bag their own purchases.
The “cashiers” are also stockers and the store manager stocks and runs register as well. They are expected to stay busy when on the clock.
Bidenomics is what government has done to our money. Kamalanomics is what I fear.
They don’t even bag your groceries. $23 an hour to push keys on a register. Ridiculous.
Publix is outrageously overpriced.
I retired from the USAF almost 30 years ago and finally moved to a location fairly close to a commissary, but I didn't notice any great deals, so I've been sticking with Walmart. I've been to Aldi's, as well, and they have some fairly reasonable pricing, too. Especially on their generic line.
That’s going away now.
“$23 an hour to push keys on a register. Ridiculous.”
The labor market appears to disagree.
Aldi can afford it, my experience from our Chino Hills CA store is that they run real lean as in understaffed. Rarely will a second check stand be opened up. The one check stand that is open, the cashier I must say hauls butt getting people through.
Aldi does not have bagboys
And what about the labor market these days can be considered to be free, and not distorted by government?
Expect food prices to rise accordingly.
