  • Ethnographic Expedition on a Range Rover

Repairing the engine, replacing the oil cooler, intercooler and rear shock absorber plus other minor miscellanea came out to an astronomical sum. The only official Land Rover dealer in all of Mongolia, a company by the name of Wagner, charged me five times the cost of the tools needed to assemble the engine. This was no mistake: the owner of a Land Rover vehicle is expected to not only pay but to significantly overpay for things he doesn’t even need. They just forget to mention that in the ads.... The humble origins of America's favorite 4x4. The current Jeep Wrangler is way more high-tech than its WWII-era forefather, but there's a direct link between the two. You can't say that about a lot of cars on sale today. Now, you can watch the Jeep's history unfold in this lovely animation from the people at Donut Media. Donut actually starts with two cars that competed with the original Willys for the US military contract—the Ford Pygymy and the American Bantam Reconnaissance Car. Then, we get into Willys-Overland's first Civilian Jeep (CJ), which gave birth to the legendary CJ5. Eventually, we...

4x4 fans look away now! Land Rovers imported to U.S. are CRUSHED by customs for failing safety rules because they don't have airbags • The exclusive vehicle was seized by customs officers in Baltimore • Its importer had attempted to fool the authorities by changing its plate • But they spotted the ruse and deemed it unfit for the US' roads • Often selling for upwards of $100,000, this one is now worth just $30 The wrecking claw hangs over the Land Rover Defender as its operator prepares to crush the exclusive vehicle on the orders of US customs. Moments...

As you can see from the images I took from the video, this did not go the way it was planned. Sometimes you just have to ask, "Whatever happened to that voice in one's head that's supposed to say,""BAD IDEA"! Just so you know, the only things hurt real bad was the truck, the guys pride, and his pocket book.

FReeper Family, I have a few questions about my F-150, which just got carted off to the repair shop. It won't go in reverse. It locks up after going a couple inches and all I can do is rev the engine after that. The truck goes forward all right. While the tow operator was checking out the problem, I saw that the drive shaft turned properly when going forward but when he put it in reverse, the small lug nuts that connect the shaft to the transfer case struggled to turn the way they should and the whole assembly just...

Ugandan MPs to get new 4x4s 10/01/2007 17:18  - (SA)    Kampala - Impoverished Uganda has bowed to demands to buy each of its more than 300 members of parliament (MPs) a brand new 4x4 vehicle costing up to $67 000 each, reported a state-owned newspaper on Wednesday. After several weeks in which MPs threatened to drag their feet on other parliamentary business until their demands for a grant to buy 4x4s were met, the government said it would buy them vehicles itself, said the New Vision daily. Parliamentary spokesperson Helen Kawesa said: "The argument of the MPs is that government is supposed...

THE “Toyotarisation” of deserts has contributed to a ten-fold increase in dust storms around the globe and is damaging the environment and human health, a leading academic said yesterday.Off-road driving in the Middle East and the south western United States is being blamed for destroying the deserts’ fragile crust and allowing clouds of fine dust particles, smaller than a grain of sand, to be swept away. Scientists estimate that there are now 3,000 million tonnes of dust being whipped thousands of miles around the world, generating storms across Africa, China, the Middle East and the US. They say that Europe...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 — In the great SUV debate, I’m finally convinced. Put me in the pro-SUV camp. And I don’t even own one. For America, SUVs are a good thing. And drivers of sport utility vehicles are America’s newest heroes. The big snowstorm provided all the evidence I needed.
