An Army base in Washington state spent part of the long holiday weekend searching for a missing part to a .50-caliber machine gun, the latest incident after the service was criticized for lost weapons. The receiver assembly of an M2 .50-caliber machine gun went missing from 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment's staff duty area and triggered an all-hands search that, for most of the rank and file, lasted a little over 12 hours. But it resulted in an Army investigation that was still ongoing Monday. A culprit was identified that afternoon, according to a soldier involved in the search. By...

When you run down the list of issues the Oath Keepers are worried about, it reads a lot like a bill of particulars from the American Civil Liberties Union. The Oath Keepers don't like warrantless searches. They're upset that the executive branch has claimed the power to classify American citizens as enemy combatants, detain them indefinitely, and try them before military tribunals. They worry that a large-scale terrorist attack similar to 9/11 could lead to the mass detention of Arabs or Muslims, just as Japanese Americans were detained during World War II. They worry about crackdowns on political speech, protest,...

One thing most Democrats will never understand is the dedication that our men and women in uniform have for their country. They make fun of people who want to live their lives by a certain code with snide remarks in movies like A Few Good Men. But the fact is, it takes people who are willing to live by the code: Duty, Honor, Country in order to keep our nation free. The brave men of the 3rd Infantry Regiment’s “Old Guard” know a thing or two about this. These disciplined, brave men have stood watch over the Tomb of the...

A grainy videotape released Tuesday shows a carload of important Al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq being blown up by missiles from a U.S. Army chopper, military officials said. At least one of the dead operatives was a "high-value" target linked to suicide bomb attacks, including the car bombing of the Australian Embassy in Baghdad, an Army spokesman told FoxNews.com. Of the six men killed in the Sunday attack, one was "believed to be an Al Qaeda cell leader known to facilitate attacks and orchestrate suicide bomb attacks," Maj. Alayne Conway of the 3rd Infantry Division told Fox. Conway did not...

WASHINGTON - In a new sign of mounting strain from the war in Iraq, the Army has extended the combat tours of about 4,000 soldiers who would otherwise be returning home, defense officials said Monday. The 1st Brigade of 1st Armored Division, which is operating in the vicinity of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, will be kept in place for several weeks beyond its scheduled departure, the officials said. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been formally announced by the Pentagon. The brigade's home base is in Germany. The soldiers' families were...

On the afternoon of April 4, Army Lt. Col. Eric Schwartz was summoned to a command tent pitched in a dusty field 11 miles south of Baghdad. His brigade commander, Col. David Perkins, looked up from a map and told Schwartz he had a mission for him. "At first light tomorrow," Perkins said, "I want you to attack into Baghdad." Schwartz felt disoriented. He had just spent several hours in a tank, leading his armored battalion on an operation that had destroyed dozens of Iraqi tanks and armored vehicles 20 miles south. A hot shard of exploding tank had burned...

The Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which played a central role in capturing Baghdad in April, is beginning a pullout from Iraq, and the entire unit will be back in the United States by September, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Wednesday. In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Rumsfeld said the division's 3rd Brigade has already reached Kuwait and will be heading home this month. The 2nd Brigade will be home in August and the 1st Brigade will return in September, he said. He said each of the final two brigades to leave Iraq will have been in the...

Smith, a sergeant first class in the 3rd Infantry Division's 11th Engineer Battalion, was killed in action at the Baghdad Airport on April 4. "Paul only had the bike, not even a year," DeVane said. Tournament to fund military scholarship Money raised in fishing competition will go to children of soldiers who died in Iraq By Rob Peecher Telegraph Staff Writer MILLEDGEVILLE -Before the statues of the former dictator came crashing down in Baghdad, Comer Gheesling had decided he wanted to do something for the soldiers fighting in Iraq. He wanted to show his appreciation, but particularly he wanted to do something for the families of those soldiers who lost their lives. So Gheesling decided the best thing to do was go fishing. Senior figures in President Bush (news - web sites)'s administration have accused Syria in recent weeks of providing military help to Saddam. The four soldiers were with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which was operating the checkpoint, and with which Koppel is embedded. The division has been among the closest U.S.-led forces to Baghdad, reaching approximately 50 to 60 miles south of Iraq's capital city. However, the exact location of the car bombing was not clear. The soldiers were standing at the side of their Bradley fighting vehicle at the checkpoint when a car drove up and exploded, killing all four, and presumably the occupants of the exploded car, Koppel reported. The incident has the military considering banning all civilian traffic through...

March 28, 2003 -- With the 54th Engineers in Al Kifl 80 miles from Baghdad THINGS are strangely still, here in Al Kifl, a town on the east bank of the Euphrates taken yesterday by the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division - a town whose outskirts mark the deepest point of the American advance to Baghdad. Corpses of Iraqi troops lie in strange twisted positions along the sagging bridge leading into the town. As U.S. troops thunder through the "Baghdad 500," a stark choice is quickly taking shape at the finish line: Should they enter Baghdad as soon as they get there, or besiege it while waiting for reinforcements and letting the air force pound targets within? On Monday less than 60 miles separated the Iraqi capital from the 20,000 troops of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, and the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force were expected to catch up to them. Meanwhile, bombers and missiles continued to strike leadership targets from the air. But neither the historically unprecedented speed of the advance and the...
