3rd Div. - 7th Cavalry on the Move in Sandstorm (LIVE CNN)
Posted on 03/25/2003 3:16:44 AM PST by ravinson
They have taken a bridge and crossed the Euphrates and are on the "tip of the spear". Walter Rodgers is reporting live on CNN, and he sounds understandably frightened about being in a light armored vehicle among the Bradleys and tanks.

Looks like a terrific sandstorm. I'm watching a Bradley going though it now.

As the reporter says, behind any one of those buildings could be a soldier...an ambush from the protection of civilian surroundings. It must be harrowing to not be able to see more than a few yards in that blowing sand.
God bless our brave and valiant fighting forces.

The embedded reporters idea is brilliant. When the reporters get back to their home offices they'll kick liberal butts who diss our soliders.

CNN's Walter Rodgers sounds like he is developing a huge respect for our military. My pride and gratitude is beyond words.

Third Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry.
Garryowen!
Attacking in a sandstorm. My God, that takes daring and inventiveness. We must have found a workaround.

But Eric Alterman(gag) thinks they would be better patriots if they didn't do this.Journalism is all that matters.

Boo hoo! A reporter afraid of a lil sandstorm? The Leathernecks have fought in all types of climes. He really should look up the Marine anthem. Semper fi!

The embedded reporters idea is brilliant. When the reporters get back to their home offices they'll kick liberal butts... I hope Walter Rodgers makes it home. He's got plenty of great stories to tell.
Unfortunately, there are also nonimbedded reporters out there trying to make the news by submitting contrasting reports. ABC's Nightslime had a reporter in that liberated city in Southern Iraq showing wounded civilians, disgruntled residents, and someone waving an Iraqi flag.

If I'm in a low-visibility situation with enemies potentially at close range, I want as much armor as I can get. Light armor is vulnerable to RPG fire, and have an effective range in the 150-200m area.
I can't say I blame him.

We won't let Iraq's technicals get that close and unlike his predecessor you can be sure President Bush won't with hold heavy armor from our military just to look good to world opinion.

This is amazing to watch live.

Oh, yeah, the heavy armor is there, but the other guys in amongst it are vulnerable.
Also, I hope we have a *really* good plan for pacifying these areas after the front line units have moved through. Watching this, we're obviously leaving a bunch of hostiles in our rear.

The good thing that I see is that the sandstorm works both ways. The Iraqis have to work through it.
There is a lot of civilian refugee traffic on that highway.

What the hell are those civilians doing driving through a battlefield? Are they being ordered to clog up the roads?

Rick Leventhal, embedded with FOX, is with the Marine LAR unit, and they were covering Marine artillery that was pounding Iraqi positions THROUGH this sandstorm.
Every "obstacle" that the media thought would stop us, in fact, our guys not only overcome, but manage to fight when the same obstacles are blinding the Iraqis. (There was no return fire!)

I see things are getting edgy... people on the ground. Our guys can't know who the bad guys are.
