If, at 85, Ridley Scott has reached the final season of his filmmaking career, Napoleon is the ideal work of wintry grandeur to mark it. Scott’s 28th feature is a magnificently hewn slab of dad cinema with a chill wind whistling over its battlefields and round its bones: its palette is so cold, even the red in the tricolore is often the shade of dried blood. Spanning 32 years, from the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 to its title character’s death on St Helena in 1821, it casts Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise, reign and downfall as both a prickly...

Tucker Carlson’s new media company has found a backer. Omeed Malik, through his newly launched 1789 Capital boutique investment company, has invested $15 million in seed capital into Last Country, the startup founded by Carlson and Neil Patel, according to The Wall Street Journal.

It’s well known that left-wing Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was a psychopath, a dark status that led to his exterminating 20 million human beings. Yet the people who help vault such tyrants to power — sometimes pejoratively called “useful idiots” — are well-meaning but naive sorts, right? Perhaps not always. In fact, a new study informs, Stalin has much psychopathic (and narcissistic) company among leftists, including among today’s variety. Moreover, the researchers found that authoritarian-minded left-wingers often don’t care a whit about the altruism and “social justice” they trumpet, but instead “use political activism to endorse or exercise violence against...

Compared to the American Revolution, the French Revolution is very disappointing to libertarians. Compared to the Russian Revolution, it looks pretty good. And it also looks good, at least in the long view, compared to the ancien regime that preceded it. Conservatives typically follow Edmund Burke’s critical view in his Reflections on the Revolution in France. They may even quote John Adams: “Helvetius and Rousseau preached to the French nation liberty, till they made them the most mechanical slaves; equality, till they destroyed all equity; humanity, till they became weasels and African panthers; and fraternity, till they cut one another’s...

A US federal appeals court has revived a lawsuit seeking to hold Rio Tinto responsible for human rights violations and thousands of deaths linked to a Bougainville copper and gold mine it once ran. The appeals court has returned the case to US District Judge Margaret Morrow in Los Angeles for further proceedings. But some dissenting judges protested against allowing a lawsuit to proceed in federal courts brought by non-US residents against non-US companies such as Rio Tinto, which has corporate offices in the UK and Australia. The case is one of several in which non-US residents seek to hold...

Labelled a “surging dark horse” candidate in France’s presidential election, communist Jean-Luc Mélenchon has a new proposal that he hopes will maintain his momentum: a 100% tax on the rich. Mélenchon is running as the candidate of the “Unbowed France political movement, in an alliance with the French Communist Party.” Mélenchon is a colorful character whose repertoire includes showing up at rallies via hologram, enabling him to “appear” at seven rallies at once.

In a previous installment I mentioned France's recent war on blogs and the internet. France along with Germany are demanding that American based ISP and Blog services censor content that might be deemed offensive to Muslims. They threatened crackdowns if it was not complied. Since last summer we have received record viewership from France. We did not know whether to attribute it to French Catholic viewership for our posts of videos and articles by Michael Voris Of Church Militant TV and other Catholic channels or if it was warning of an impending attack by the French Government and or perhaps...

So the latest round of sheer nuttiness from the mainstream media? The idea that President-elect Trump intends to resurrect the infamous and quite decidedly racist “internment camps†established for Japanese-American citizens in 1942. How did this start? It started last week on FNC’s The Kelly File during a segment with Trump surrogate and former Navy Seal Carl Higbie (whom I know). Kelly cited this story from Reuters: “Immigration hardliner says Trump preparing plans for wall, mulling Muslim registry†The story goes on to say that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach informs Trump advisers “had discussed drafting a proposal for...

NEW YORK – President Obama's newly confirmed administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs has several times quoted approvingly from an author who likened animals to slaves and argued an adult dog or a horse is more rational than a human infant and should therefore be granted similar rights. A brief video on YouTube captures Cass Sunstein at a 2002 event using the writings of Jeremy Bentham, a 19th Century social reformer and animal rights pioneer. "You've heard a reference to Bentham, so let's listen to him, shall we," he begins in the video. He then...

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:" Now, therefore, I do...

Many commentators have questioned whether the Iraqi elections, scheduled for 30 January, 2004, should be delayed. Such comments from anyone at the UN should be rejected out of hand. After all, the UN is dominated by dictatorships who fear free elections the way vampires fear necklaces of garlic. Plus, the UN is on a long, unrelieved run of anti-Americanism. Whatever the US favors, UN bureaucrats will instinctively oppose. But some of the groundswell to delay the Iraqi election comes from the likes of the New York Times, who ought to know better. This is perhaps the tenth time I have...

One would expect that in light of their recent Election Day trouncing, Democrat lefties, secular humanists, and disgruntled advocates of Christian abolition, might at least extend a feigned olive branch of understanding to those fanatical, pious, ''born-again'' red-stater types who were in great part, responsible for the Democratic Party’s ''inexplicable'' and ''unjust'' defeat. One would be wrong. In his 1789 Thanksgiving Day proclamation, George Washington declared, in part: ''Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and...

There is quite a lot to be thankful for this year. On the home front, everyone is as healthy as they were last year at this time and doing well. Governments in our metropolitan area are seeing shortfalls, as usual. But, we just consider who is running them. Overall, the economy looks good here. Unemployment, even here in the center of the so called rust belt, is way down now. Of course, we're thankful that the Republicans kept the executive and legislative branches in Washington. Not because we like them all and everything they do, understand. But, consider the socialist...

Miami newspapers are reporting that relatives of those killed and wounded in street demonstrations ahead of the April 11 coup d'etat last year are planning a lawsuit in which they claim were victims of "a plot by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias." Despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary, the families of six dead protesters and nine wounded are insisting that that Chavez "personally planned the assault on demonstrators at least four days in advance and coordinated the attack by radio." In a copy of the lawsuit (listing 29 defendants and naming President Chavez, top government officials and army...

BASTILLE DAY By Bill Bonner "One man has a skinny wife, and wants a fat one...another has a fat wife and wants a skinny one."- The Marquis de Sade explains why people join revolutions Marat/Sade by Peter Weir "They've gone mad." - George III "Vive la revolution!" Only an American would say such a thing at a Bastille Day celebration. Raising our glasses at yesterday's picnic, the Frenchmen looked puzzled, then amused, at my toast. Everybody celebrates the 14th July in France. But no one would want to see a return of the revolution. "Oh...there were some good things and...
