George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation
Wilstar and earlyamerica.com ^ | Oct. 3, 1789 | President Washington

Posted on 11/22/2007 6:26:22 AM PST by Pharmboy

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

As published that week in the Maffachufetts CENTINEL

This so clearly illustrates that we are a country based, in part, on freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.

Perhaps the ACLU should criticize The General for this proclamation.

Don't give 'em any ideas...

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. And from the next century...

PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S THANKSGIVING DAY PROCLAMATION, OCTOBER 3, 1863.

And a heartfelt thanks to our troops and their families. A Happy Thanksgiving to them and God bless them.

The American Communists and Liberals United against God and country and family are a thankless people and will have much sorrows as they continue in their godless pursuit of death, hell and the grave. They are an evil people and Satan’s minions.

Quick histroical note: The General was inaugurated in NYC, where Wall and Broad Streets meet, on April 30, 1789. Fifteen months later the capital of the new republic moved to Philadelphia where President Washington spent the rest of his terms in office. This occured because of an agreement reached by Hamilton and Jefferson over dinner at TJ's NYC apartment on Maiden Lane (a plaque is there today on a skyscraper). Madison was also in attendance.

For moving the capital out of NYC, Hamilton won the federal assumption of RevWar debt (which TJ was against). Some old-fashioned horse trading.

American Communists and Liberals United

That would be funny if it weren't true. Never saw it before...a good one.

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor;"

Why this can't be true! Too many ex-Freepers lectured us on how the Founding Fathers didn't believe in God. Surely there must be a mistake here! (sarc)

Thanks for the post.

The source of the text, “Wilstar and earlyamerica.com,” omitted some words from the last sentence. Compare it to the original. Here is the last sentence with omitted text reinserted and bolded:

Given under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

George Washington.

Excellent post, Pharmboy. As always, thanks for showing us all how great a man George Washington was and how blessed we are to have had him as our first President.

There is, and can be no doubt, Satan’s minions abound here on earth. Satan’s minions will attempt to do all possible to destroy our Nation, but God cannot be defeated. God will help, and has helped America down through the centuries since our Nation’s birth. Satan hates God and America. Satan hates our giving Thanks, but Satan will never be the last one standing. I believe this, with all my being, as did the Founders of our Nation. Satan having sent his minions to destroy America can never be accomplished as long as America holds on to God. For God is our Nation’s Protector. The Founders knew, countless Americans know. Satan hates us, but Satan you can’t beat God. Though Satan sends his minions against US, Satan will fail.

I give Thanks to God for His loving our Nation. God loves and blesses America because God knows our hearts. God knows America trusts Him. I bet God smiles ever time God looks at one of our pieces of money. For in God we Trust, is not a slogan or a phrase, but rather a Thanksgiving unto God, for our Nation, and the Blessings of Liberty granted to America from God. Yes, I believe God is proud of America, even with all of our faults. God understands why America turns her cheek, so often after being hit, it was and is because God's Son asked us to. But God has granted America the Warriors to defend US. God is always gracious unto those who believe. Our Nation believes, because our Founders led each of us on the way, with the truth, and the light, given by each Founder, who believed in God's Son. May God never turn his back to US and walk away, as Satan constantly requests God to do. Thankgiving unto you, God!

Here are two earlier Thanksgiving Proclamations:

Congressional Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, November 1, 1777 Document
http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/religion/vc006494.jpg

Congressional Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, October 11, 1782
http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/religion/vc006491.jpg

From what I have seen, the founders mentioned God often, and in various ways.

Thanks for these.

And yes, while the Founders did not want a government bound to any religion, it is nothing more than modern mythology put forth by the media and government-run schools that they supported the banning of religion from public life. For anyone to think for a moment that Washington, Adams, Madison, Hamilton, &etc., would object to a Nativity Scene in the public square is either ignorant or a liar.

General Washington was a God-fearing and church-going man his entire life. As far as I know, Thomas Paine was the only atheist out of the Revolutionary group of men and women.

Have you noticed that this Thanksgiving God has been pretty much taken out of the holiday. As the proclamations clearly state, Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks to HIM for our many blessings. The secular society has ignored that fact ans, now, encourages people to give thanks to their friends, family, police, firemen, and on and on but NOT GOD. Ask an atheist sometime who he is thanking when he celebrates Thanksgiving and why isn’t he working?
