'Now I've come home at last,' exalted the world's most boisterous hobo, arriving at his own party on Harlem's Adam Clayton Plaza, named after a famous militant black politician. Bill Clinton may be from a poor white family in rural Arkansas, and many of his guests this warm summer evening were political wheeler-dealers from deep inside the Washington Beltway, but the crowd that turned out to give Clinton a tumultuous welcome the day he became a citizen of Harlem was black and proud of him. One man even painted dreadlocks on the smiling photo- portrait - one of hundreds - ...

GENVAL, Belgium, Sept 8 (Reuters) - France said on Saturday that NATO should remain in charge of a military force to protect foreign observers in Macedonia after alliance forces have completed collecting ethnic Albanian rebel weapons. Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine said it was clear that an international security force would be necessary after NATO's current mission ends on September 26. He rejected a suggestion by EU Macedonia envoy Francois Leotard for the European Union to take charge. "If the new European security and defence arrangements were organised enough for this mission, it would be a good idea. But because ...

TETOVO, Macedonia (AP) - The police chief in Macedonia's main ethnic Albanian city predicted new clashes Saturday unless authorities can rein in Macedonian paramilitary gangs that may have been joined by militias from neighboring Serbia. Saip Bilali's report of a Serb presence has not been independently confirmed. But if true, it would add another worrisome element threatening the fragile calm as Macedonia marked the 10th anniversary of its independence from Yugoslavia. ``The danger is permanent,'' said Bilali, who is ethnic Albanian. He said there was ``verified information'' that paramilitary militiamen from Serbia have been seen near the western Macedonian town ...

KABUL, Afghanistan (news - web sites) (Reuters) - The foreign minister of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban was quoted Sunday saying the hard-line movement might consider swapping eight detained foreign aid workers for an Islamic militant jailed in the United States. But Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil, quoted in the Taliban's Shariat Daily, stressed that the trial of the aid workers, accused of promoting Christianity, would first have to be completed. ``The authorities and responsibles of the Islamic Emirate (of Afghanistan) will deliberate about such a request, and after consideration and research, a decision will be taken,'' he was quoted as saying. ``But above ...

Modern air travel offers all the joys of prison, plus the chance to crash - as passengers packed into an Air Transat charter flight discovered recently when their aircraft ran out of fuel over the Atlantic and barely managed to reach the Azores. When I was young, you bought a moderately priced ticket from your nice neighbourhood travel agent, dressed up in your best clothes, and leisurely boarded a flight on which "economy" seats were as wide and well-spaced as those in today's business class. Pretty, young stewardesses smiled and waited on you. These days, air travel has become Sovietized: ...

WASHINGTON – Showing greater flexibility on immigration issues, Congress is ready to approve a measure giving more time, until spring 2002, for some undocumented immigrants to secure resident status. Based on assurances from GOP leaders, the House is expected next week to adopt a measure passed by the Senate late Thursday that extends for one year the period for immigrants to apply for visas without leaving the United States. The Bush administration and senators of both parties pushed for the extension. They wanted to demonstrate during the visit of Mexican President Vicente Fox that Congress is ready to consider major ...

Horror abortion raises key questions Thongbai Thongpao Readers of Thai Rath, the biggest selling Thai daily, were recently treated to the shocking headline: ``Ruthless abortion doctor cuts off arm of 8-month-old baby'', accompanied by pictures of the dead baby and its young mother. The mother, an 18-year-old Nonthaburi schoolgirl, was brought to the clinic in Ayutthaya to get an abortion by her own parents. The fee charged for the illegal service was 20,000 baht. An Ayutthaya doctor pointed out that no pregnancy should be aborted at such a late stage. Even a 7-month-old foetus can easily survive premature delivery. The ...

VENICE (Reuters) - John Lennon may not have liked him, but Peter Fonda was there in the Sixties when the Beatles got so high on LSD George Harrison thought he was going to die. And it was Fonda, the cult hero who rode a Harley Davidson across America with Dennis Hopper in the 1969 classic ``Easy Rider,'' who inspired the lyrics to the Beatles song ``She Said, She Said.'' ``It was one afternoon in 1965, I remember it clearly,'' the tall, cowboy-booted Fonda, 62, told Reuters in an interview on Saturday. ``John and George had already had a dose, ...
