As White House officials move to refocus President Bush's energies on the precarious economy, they are working to present him as a more commanding leader in what may be the most treacherous stretch of his first year in the White House. The economic and political challenges facing Mr. Bush were underscored earlier this week when his senior adviser, Karl Rove, joined more than a dozen prominent Republicans for a private dinner and heard an unvarnished critique of Mr. Bush's style and strategy. The message, delivered on Tuesday in a dark-paneled room at the Metropolitan Club, two blocks from the White ...

Jim Wilson/The New York TimesPresident George Bush, shown at a 1988 news conference, came to be haunted by his broken "read my lips" pledge not to raise taxes. ASHINGTON, Sept. 8 — Eleven years ago during a fierce budget battle with Congress, President George Bush reneged on one of his main campaign promises — his read-my-lips pledge not to raise taxes. This proved disastrous politically and contributed to his failure to win re-election. Now, with another bitter fight over the budget in the offing, President Bush is faced with many of the same circumstances that confronted his father, including ...

Daniel Patrick Moynihan perplexes me. When we worked together in the late 1970s and early '80s -- he as a United States senator, I as a veteran commissioner of Social Security -- he was the most effective defender of the Social Security program in Congress. It was our teamwork on the Greenspan Commission in 1983 that, in his words, "literally saved Social Security for the decades that followed." That phrase appears in Moynihan's preface to the recent Interim Report of the President's Commission on Social Security Reform -- the commission, co-chaired by Moynihan, that has been charged by President Bush ...

How Segregation and an Indomitable Family Shaped National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice LONG AGO, in segregated Birmingham, on the children's floor of a downtown department store, a white saleslady spotted an exquisitely dressed black mother heading with her young daughter for fitting rooms reserved for whites only. The year was 1961, and downtown Birmingham was an apartheid society, with blacks assigned inferior status in where they ate, where they relieved themselves, even where little girls tried on pretty dresses. The saleslady stepped into the path of the mother and child, took the dress from the little girl and motioned to ...

Agreement - but at a cost of deep disarray? The UN conference against racism, which teetered on the brink of collapse over the Middle East, has closed with an accord on a global plan to fight discrimination. It came a day late and only after further discussions were curtailed by a blocking vote. The conference in Durban, South Africa, adopted two documents - a declaration of principles and an action plan to combat discrimination which the 160 or so states attending agreed to implement. We have not been deterred from making a breakthrough here in Durban UN Human Rights Commissioner ...

Beijing - A new type of computer virus, more lethal than the infamous Code Red worm that snarled Web servers around the world, has infected a number of Chinese computers, the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday. The virus, called Worm.IIS.CodeBlue, broke out on Wednesday and paralysed some computers by infecting the Windows 2000 system, Xinhua quoted sources with a Beijing-based anti-virus company as saying. "Experts believe that this virus is more damaging than the previous Code Red II," Xinhua said. Code Red was discovered in July and according to a US congressional report probably originated at a ...

EIGHT western aid workers who face a possible death sentence for preaching Christianity appeared for the first time in a packed Kabul courtroom yesterday to protest their innocence. The accused - two Americans, two Australians and four Germans - looked exhausted as heavily armed soldiers led them before a bank of bearded, white-turbaned judges. One of the six women wore the head-to-toe burqa that Afghan women have to wear in public. The others covered their heads with veils. It was the first time any of the eight, who worked for the German-based Christian relief agency Shelter Now International, had been ...

Based on early indications, most members of the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association may have been left unprepared for a building controversy over the organization's support of CARA. CARA is the Conservation and Reinvestment Act, HR 701 and now S 1326, poised for a Congressional vote. If passed, the Act would divert $3.125 billion per year, for 15 years, from the federal general revenue pool to a special fund set aside for public conservation and recreation purposes. A great deal of the money would be devoted to land acquisitions by federal and state governments. Hundreds of millions ...

Was at Stop and Shop today -- one of the new really big ones. Went to the deli counter and asked for five potato pancakes. They were priced at 75 cents each. The young women working the counter bagged the pancakes and then tried to enter them into the deli tagging machine. For some reason, the machine would not accept the SKU code. She was stumped. I offered, "Well, five at 75 cents is $ 3.75." She just stared at me and kept trying to enter the SKU. Still stumped. She called over another young woman working the deli counter. ...

It will be very easy for you to say, "Well, I will do something, some day. When I can afford it, I am going to." But would you let an old "grad" tell you one thing now? Giving is a habit. Get into the habit now, because you will never be able to afford to give and contribute, thus to repay the obligation you owe to those people who made this college possible, if you wait until you think you can afford it. Start now regardless of how small, and in the days to come when you are confronted with ...

Hey Freepers! It's been a fun few days lately, getting back on FR since I have been busy with college and stuff. I've read throughout though, and I'm eager to share my book opinions and to hear what you, the intelligent Freeper is reading.Rise to Rebellion, by Jeff Shaara.Usually the efforts of sons pale in comparison to those of the father, at least in the world of writing. Look at the Herberts and the Dune series. There is a major exception when it comes to the Shaara family. I think it could be argued now that the son has surpassed ...
