Bill Clinton, private citizen, jetted into Sydney yesterday and declared that he loved living in the political shadow of his wife Hillary.
"I'm very proud of the work my wife is doing as a senator and I like it a lot," he said.
"She helped me for 25 years and the least I can do is help her.
"I like having my life as a private citizen back."
But even in his relaxed new mode as one of the world's highest-paid public speakers, Mr Clinton's second visit to Australia was almost as presidential as the first, in 1996 as US Commander-in-Chief. Mobbed by autograph hunters and cheered by patients at the Children's Hospital, Westmead, Mr Clinton declared wherever he went: "I'm so glad to be back in Australia."
He even took time to discuss the Middle East crisis, with a Palestinian family whose son was being treated at Westmead for a broken leg.
Last night a huge audience at a Randwick Racecourse Pavilion function paid $1,100 each to hear a 45-minute speech by Mr Clinton at a fundraiser for the Children's Hospital.
Yesterday, the former US President drew waves from sailors and ferryloads of passengers all along his trip past the Opera House and up the Parramatta River on his way to the hospital.
He waved back and smiled through it all.
Mr Clinton said: "I love this country, the people. It's so beautiful. I went to the rainforest, I went to the Great Barrier Reef, I did a lot of things last time.
"I'm going to give a couple of talks and meet some people. I've got a couple of friends here I'm going to show Sydney, and we're going to have a good time.
"I miss work. I love doing the work but, you know, I am out here doing things I believe in and having a good time.
"I'm very grateful for the life I have."
Mr Clinton's visit - the weekend in Sydney and a day in Melbourne - began just after dawn yesterday with the arrival of his commercial jet, the first-class section of which exclusively carried the former US leader and his Secret Service guards.
Yesterday he chose a harbour cruise, on the boat owned by the sponsor of last night's Westmead charity dinner, Froggy telco chief Karl Suleman.
Tailed by three water police boats carrying the Secret Service officers, Mr Clinton set off in the company of Mr Suleman, six other men and promoter Max Markson and his teenage daughters, Sharri and Rikki.
After Mr Clinton posed for photographs with his sailing companions in Farm Cove, his boat sped under the Harbour Bridge, past Greenwich and Hunters Hill and up the Parramatta River.
The party spent an hour on the water before disembarking at Homebush Bay Wharf and driving to the Children's Hospital.
Mr Clinton toured the oncology ward and Starlight entertainment room.
He took a "bandaged bear" from nine-year-old Matthew Thompson, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and diabetes.
"If you see me from now on anywhere in the world with this bear, you'll know it's yours," Mr Clinton told Matthew, of Glenmore Park.
He stopped to greet Palestinian-born Faisal Tuyeh, of Auburn, to say that the US Democratic Party had been "close to solving the problem between the Palestinians and Israel, but when Mr Sharon took power everything changed".
Last night's dinner at Randwick was to raise $1 million for high-technology equipment and research into pediatric cardiac surgery.

See? Damn Republicans and rightwing extremist Ariel ruined everything.
I am quite sure Clinton fiddles around every second that he can.
Can you BELIEVE the idea!!!!
But he didn't inhale.
He took a bear away from a sick kid? How low can you go?
Oh, but if the kid sees the bear with Mr. Clinton, that's supposed to make it all right. And like Clinton's really going to be carrying this bear with him everywhere he goes. "Hi, I'm Bill Clinton, people of Borneo, and you see this bear I'm holding? I took it from a sick boy in Australia. Hi, Matthew, are you watching this?"

Democrats let Frank, then Clinton and now Condit, get away with the unthinkable. Then, they force men like Gingrich and Livingston to resign in disgrace over minor extramarital affairs that, in contrast, involved no lawbreaking." ~~Debbie Schussel~~
