How do we know whether newly minted doctors have what it takes to prevent patient deaths? After completing residency training, graduating physicians typically take board certification exams at the time they enter practice — but surprisingly little is known about the ability of these standard tests to predict the things that count the most in a doctor’s performance, such as how likely their patients are to survive or to avoid a return trip to the hospital. A new study, published May 6 in JAMA, found that internal medicine patients of newly trained physicians with top scores on the board certification...

[Catholic Caucus] Preparing for the Pope’s PassingThere is an apologia brewing for the spirit of the Francis papacy as secular stakeholders recoil to lose his fast-and-loose presence in the Vatican with the same vehemence as they recoil at Donald Trump’s fast-and-furious return to the White House. At the time of this writing, Pope Francis is in critical condition at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome with a complex case of pneumonia in both lungs and early-stage kidney failure. Before all else, we pray for his well-being and peace. But death is in the air. The Swiss Guard have held funeral rehearsals. The...

The Kremlin on Tuesday refuted President Trump’s claim that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is ready for European peacekeepers to be installed in Ukraine. “There is a position on this matter that was expressed by Russian Foreign Minister [Sergey] Lavrov,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference. “Russia media site TASS reported. I have nothing to add to this and nothing to comment on.” Peskov was referring to Lavrov’s recent remarks asserting that Russia would find it unacceptable if NATO-aligned troops were put in Ukraine after a peace deal is negotiated.

Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, currently one of the 10 richest men in the world, discussed the mistakes he's made during six decades in charge of his company and his outlook on the economy in the coming years as part of his annual letter to shareholders. Why It Matters Buffett, who is 94 years old and has a net worth of just over $160 billion, took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 when the company primarily focused on textiles and was a sinking ship of an investment. The now-famous "Wizard of Omaha" spent years reversing those fortunes and turned the...

An analyst note flagging a possible slowdown by Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab in leasing data center capacity grabbed the market's attention on Monday, lending credence to skepticism among investors worried that the AI-led stock-market boom might be running out of steam. TD Cowen analysts in a note Friday said the tech giant had scrapped leases for sizeable data center capacity in the United States, suggesting potential oversupply as it builds out artificial intelligence infrastructure. The brokerage, citing its supply chain checks, said Microsoft has canceled leases totaling "a couple of hundred megawatts" of capacity with at least two private...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is threatening to withhold aid from cities that do not follow his homeless policies — while arguing at the same time that it would be wrong for the federal government to withhold aid from California. Newsom is asking Congress and the Trump administration for $40 billion in aid to deal with the aftermath of the deadly Los Angeles fires — even as he spends $50 million to fight Trump over immigration and other issues. California officials have generally pushed back against the idea that federal aid for the fires should have “strings,” such as Ambassador Ric...

The freshman class of House Democrats in 2018 was swept into Washington on a wave of anti-Trump energy, brought to power to check the whims of the White House. Now, three of those members — and possibly more to come — have launched gubernatorial bids, arguing that the forefront of the fight against President Donald Trump this time around will be waged in the states. These Democratic women running for governor include Rep. Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland in New Mexico. All three of them are making the...

We’re lucky that a major terror attack on the scale of the 9/11 attacks didn’t occur under Joe Biden because our intelligence community appeared preoccupied with a secret sex chat where members of the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, and the Defense Intelligence Agency spoke graphically about castration, peeing fetishes, and gangbangs. Chris Rufo and Hannah Grossman discovered this Candyland of perversion, securing screenshots. It was reportedly legitimized through some DEI push within the intelligence community—all this activity was done on government time. ... The CIA responded last night, adding that the officials who participated in these escapades had...

It was a delicate balancing act for the man once considered Europe’s “Trump whisperer”. Emmanuel Macron, the French president, was seated in the Oval Office gently trying to factcheck Donald Trump in real time as the US president pushed a narrative that Ukraine had taken advantage of US support during its defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion. Now, said Trump, it is time to get paid back. “This war cost all of us a lot of money,” said Macron as a scowling Trump looked on. “And this is the responsibility of Russia because the aggressor is Russia.” Trump broke in. “Just...

E.T. drone home? An airport in Turkey was forced to suspend operations after a mysterious unidentified flying object was spotted in the sky. The incident occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 10 p.m. after pilots spotted the UFO traveling near Gaziantep Airport in Gaziantep at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet, the Mirror reported. Alarmed, they radioed the control tower, prompting the air hub to ground all flights for an hour while they tried to identify the mystery craft — which apparently did not appear on the radar, according to local outlets. Following their investigation, airport security concluded that the...

Ndola is one of the most prominent towns in Zambia's Copperbelt province. Today, the numerous copper mines in the region provide the region's wealth. But in the past, a darker industry spurred the settlement. Still standing near the center of town, the Slave Tree was the central location where Swahili slave traders met to discuss their gruesome transactions. Under its shade, Swahili traders such as Chipembere, Mwalabu, and Chiwala held councils of war and sold enslaved people to the Mambundu from Angola. Much of central and southern Africa, including modern-day Zambia, was crisscrossed by slave traders transporting human captives...
