A team of scientists has designed a strategy for preventing the cardiotoxic effects of anthracyclines, a widely used class of anticancer drugs. Cardiotoxicity is a frequent adverse secondary effect of cancer therapy with these drugs. The study demonstrates that treatment with the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin can mitigate the cardiac injury associated with anthracycline therapy. Anthracyclines are first-line medications in the treatment of cancer, but in 5% of patients their use is associated with severe cardiotoxicity, leading to chronic heart failure. "Although anthracycline cardiotoxicity has been known about for decades, effective preventive therapies have been lacking due to limited knowledge of...

alifornia Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed two bills Friday providing $50 million to fight President Donald Trump’s policies — after returning from a trip to Washington, DC, where he sought federal aid money for recent wildfires in his state. Both bills were passed after a special legislative session called by Newsom after the election to prepare California to lead the opposition to the second Trump administration. Newsom and the Democrat-controlled legislature reached a deal to fund the anti-Trump effort even as the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire were still smoldering in Los Angeles. One bill, SBX1-1, provides for “additional funding...

Drinking ketones improves heart health, a new small-scale study has found. This is the first time people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been given a drink with ketone esters—a supplement that is meant to plunge your system into ketosis (a metabolic state where your body is forced to burn fats instead of carbohydrates)—to monitor the effect on the heart. Dr. Maria Perissiou said, "We saw an improvement in cardiac efficiency after the participants had the drink with ketones, compared to a placebo drink." The trial involved 13 participants who were given a drink with ketones, and then a placebo...

Consuming one gram of omega-3 per day may slow down the rate of biological aging in humans, according to an analysis of data from a clinical trial involving over 700 older adults over a three-year period. Previous clinical trial research has shown that restricting caloric intake may slow aging in humans. Other research conducted in animal studies or small pilot trials on slowing biological aging, such as by consuming vitamin D or omega-3, has also shown promising effects. However, whether these interventions work in humans remains unclear. Researchers Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, Steve Horvath and colleagues used molecular biology tools known as...

Intermittent fasting may benefit antioxidant and inflammatory markers in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study. Aryan Tavakoli and colleagues randomly assigned 44 postmenopausal women (with overweight or obesity) with rheumatoid arthritis to either following a 16:8 intermittent fasting diet or their usual diet. The researchers found that the intermittent fasting group showed significant decreases in serum malondialdehyde levels and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and increased catalase levels versus the control group. There were also significant decreases seen in the liver enzymes aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase in the intermittent fasting group. "In conclusion, these findings indicate that intermittent fasting...

...Tell el-Amarna, also known as Akhetaton, captured the imaginations of Borchardt and the European archaeological community around the turn of the century as the capital city built under Akhenaten...In 1911, Borchardt won the support of James Simon, a wealthy art collector who founded the German Oriental Society, to finance an excavation...Previous expeditions had already mapped the ancient city completely. President Trump on Friday signed an Executive Order dismantling Joe Biden’s gun control actions. “The Second Amendment is an indispensable safeguard of security and liberty. It has preserved the right of the American people to protect ourselves, our families, and our freedoms since the founding of our great Nation. Because it is foundational to maintaining all other rights held by Americans, the right to keep and bear arms must not be infringed,” President Trump’s Executive Order said. Trump ordered US Attorney General Pam Bondi to review all of Joe Biden’s unconstitutional gun control Executive Orders to assess ongoing infringements of...

A USAID worker who managed to survive widespread cuts by DOGE has described the horror watching their coworkers being fired. President Trump has gone scorched-earth against the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) this week, claiming it is 'corrupt'. Amidst huge amounts of layoffs at the agency, one staff member described to NPR how during a virtual staff meeting on Monday people started leaving one by one as their access was cut off. The staffer said: 'It was like from a horror film', after the administration ordered at least 8,000 staffers and contractors onto permanent leave or furlough. "There...

A group of teachers at a New Jersey high school sparked outrage by wearing Gulf of America T-shirts to class — in what some have called an attempt to bully Latino students in the majority Hispanic school. Donned by a small cluster of Belleville High School teachers on a recent dress-down day, the shirts are a reference to President Trump’s executive order declaring the Gulf of Mexico should instead be called the Gulf of America, NJ.com reported. But the overt political statement has others crying foul in the suburban township of about 35,000 perched 15 miles west of Manhattan. “Our...
