Drinking ketones improves heart health, a new small-scale study has found.
This is the first time people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been given a drink with ketone esters—a supplement that is meant to plunge your system into ketosis (a metabolic state where your body is forced to burn fats instead of carbohydrates)—to monitor the effect on the heart.
Dr. Maria Perissiou said, "We saw an improvement in cardiac efficiency after the participants had the drink with ketones, compared to a placebo drink."
The trial involved 13 participants who were given a drink with ketones, and then a placebo drink over a week later. Their cardiovascular function was measured 30 minutes later using non-invasive monitoring, similar to an ECG; ultrasound to assess microvascular function, which looks at the health of the vessels; and infrared spectroscopy, which assesses the blood flow into small vessels.
Dr. Perissiou said, "In all 13 of the participants, their hearts were working more efficiently after the ketone drink at rest and during moderate intensity exercise, compared to the placebo drink."
Our bodies have two different fuel tanks—glucose and free fatty acids. Healthy people use glucose because it's more efficient, but people with diabetes tend to use free fatty acids because their bodies are unable to break down glucose into energy due to insulin resistance.
Dr. Perissiou said, "For patients with diabetes, glucose can stay in the bloodstream and act like rust—destroying the vessels gradually.”
"The drug SGLT2i was used to lower glucose in patients with diabetes and longitudinal studies were showing that it was inadvertently protecting the heart. The hypothesis was that the drug induces ketosis and the heart was using ketones, which improved heart health, but the evidence for this was limited so our research set out to prove the connection."

Diabetics can’t process blood sugar well, but apparently have a good capacity to use ketones to power the heart and other cells. Tissue that appeared to not function strangely came back alive enough to perform moderate intensity exercise well.
I’m familiar with keto foods. But what drinks do you recommend?
Sounds like a keto diet could cure two diseases for them.

Healthy people use glucose because it’s more efficient, but people with diabetes tend to use free fatty acids because their bodies are unable to break down glucose into energy due to insulin resistance

This isn’t quite correct. Chronic overexposure to insulin basically causes Diabetes type II. We become “sugar burners”. Our bodies, even our cells right down to the mitochondria, the little “factories” in our cells, show a marked preference for burning glucose. Just like we do in the kitchen. “I don’t feel like cooking, but this box of saltines are easier.”
The normal pathways for the uptake and re-regulation of fatty acids become atrophied and disused. More and more insulin is pumped to have the same effect.
By restricting calories, by restricting carbohydrates, our bodies are forced to relearn what our bodies are adapted to do in the first place. You’ll get all the Ketones without buying any pills. Insulin levels drop, and contrary hormones like Glucagon increase. Non-alcoholic fatty liver impairment - one of the few human organs that can repair itself. Blood sugar, blood lipid parameters improve dramatically. Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, even type II diabetes can be reversed.
Would they be as effective as Berberine?
I’ll have acetone on the rocks, please. Shaken, not stirred.
Just a tad pricey!
So, on the cheap, a tablespoon of MEK in a glass of water will be heart healthy
Bert, I wish you had added a sarcasm tag to that. I know it’s meant as humor, but others might look that up to try it.
