Daily omega-3 fatty acids may help human organs stay young
Medical Xpress / Nature Publishing Group / Nature Aging ^ | Feb. 3, 2025 | Heike A. Bischoff-Ferrari et al

Consuming one gram of omega-3 per day may slow down the rate of biological aging in humans, according to an analysis of data from a clinical trial involving over 700 older adults over a three-year period.

Previous clinical trial research has shown that restricting caloric intake may slow aging in humans. Other research conducted in animal studies or small pilot trials on slowing biological aging, such as by consuming vitamin D or omega-3, has also shown promising effects. However, whether these interventions work in humans remains unclear.

Researchers Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, Steve Horvath and colleagues used molecular biology tools known as epigenetic clocks to calculate how rates of aging were affected during a clinical trial involving 777 participants aged 70 and older from Switzerland.

During the clinical trial, testing eight different groups or treatments, participants consumed 2,000 International units (IU) of vitamin D per day, and/or took 1 gram of omega-3 per day and/or participated in a 30-minute home exercise program 3 times a week across a 3-year span.

In an analysis of blood samples, Bischoff-Ferrari and colleagues found that omega-3 consumption moderately slowed biological aging across several of the epigenetic clocks by up to 4 months. This finding was not dependent on the sex, age or body mass index of the participant. Combining omega-3, vitamin D, and exercise was found to work even better, as shown by one of the tests.

Additionally, the authors also found that these three interventions together had the biggest impact on lowering cancer risk and preventing frailty over three years. Each intervention works through different but related mechanisms, and when combined, they reinforce each other, creating a stronger overall effect, the authors suggest.

“Combining omega-3, vitamin D, and exercise was found to work even better, as shown by one of the tests.“

A minimum of four months of clock reversal was provided by Omega-3s, alone.

This is of course dependent on buying a good brand.

Drying oils like these go bad easily and I can tell when I get ones that have oxidized.

Unless mistaken, the article never defines “omega-3” or how to consume it. A bunch of vitamins are shown.

“Daily omega-3 fatty acids may help human organs stay young”

Then how come I feel so damned OLD? Been taking Antarctic krill oil, the requisite amount of Vitamin D, and exercising a minimum of an hour a day (cycling and squats/stretches EVERY day).

I try to keep the rust shined off. Now all the friction points are wearing out.

Salmon is a great source of Omega 3. I eat Alaskan salmon every third night for dinner.

Alaskan salmon is the only salmon to eat. Salmon from the Atlantic is all farmed.
Walmart has terrific Alaskan salmon, my Safeway has it too and so does Trader Joe. Kroger/Fred Meyer has nothing but Atlantic salmon.

Our elderly cat has certainly improved in energy since the vet suggested a fish oil supplement. She is back to climbing the cat structure and nearby cabinet.
We humans eat salmon weekly but we have not exactly gotten younger.

I eat fish of various types at least 4-5 times a week.

But if you get the gelatin capsules don’t get cheap ones.

You’ll smell like a rotten fish when you, well fill in the blank.

“1 gram of omega-3 per day” (i.e., 1,000 mg). From Black Seed Oil, I get
Omega-3 - 10 mg/day
Omega-6 - 2,625 mg/day
Omega-9 - 895 mg/day

So that Omega 3 is only 1% of the recommended dose!

But I also take 2,500 mg/day of Krill Oil. I can calculate the amount of DHA, EPA, Phospholipids, and Astaxanthin (esterified) I am getting, but am not sure how much Omega-3 that produces in the body.

Nordic Naturals quotes “health studies” that conclude “adults consume a minimum of 500 mg of EPA and DHA each day.”

In my Krill Oil, I’m getting 180 mg DHA and 330 mg EPA. Still short of the target.

Been taking Omega-3 (10 pills daily) and Vitamin D3 (5000 IU) daily for 20 years.

Started having to use reading glasses at age 40. Now, no longer need them.

From age 45 to 65, was going to chiropractor weekly due to bad disc. No longer have any back pain and no longer go (to chiropractor).

Arthritis in left thumb, starting age 60, now gone. No other arthritis pain at all.

Still work in my professional surveying/mapping/drone photogrammetry business daily at minimum 40 hour work week.

Walk fast with normal gait.

Heart doctor ordered up test (along with a series of other checks), and found blood vessels clear with no signs of any blockage.

Have had no sign of memory loss.

Flame away.

Age 83.

I love these articles. I have exercised my whole life, I’ve eaten enough tuna to feed a small country, basically cut out sugar and almost all carbs years ago. Still almost died of a heart attack at 59. You just can’t beat genetics.

There's your answer. You're wearing out.

Thirty years of tennis and volleyball. I thought I was strengthening everything. Turns out I was just wearing out my knees.
