A New York doctor was indicted by a grand jury in Louisiana on criminal abortion charges for allegedly prescribing an abortion-inducing drug to a teen in the state, which has one of the country's strictest abortion bans. Ten jurors in the District Court for the Parish of West Baton Rouge unanimously voted to charge Margaret Carpenter and her practice, Nightingale Medical located in New Paltz, New York, with a felony. If convicted, Carpenter could face up to 15 years in prison and up to $200,000 in fines. The Louisiana teenager’s mother was also charged. ‘It is illegal to send abortion...

An aspiring air traffic controller who claimed he was denied a job because of diversity targets said the aviation agency’s obsession with inclusion made an accident likely to happen. Andrew Brigida, 35, scored 100 per cent in his training exam but alleged that he was denied a position in an air traffic control tower because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recruitment process favoured diverse candidates. He is part of a class action lawsuit filed against the federal agency. Speaking after the Washington air disaster, in which 67 people were killed, Mr Brigida claimed that years of diversity hiring meant it...

On Wednesday, January 29 an Army Helicopter collided with an American Airlines plane trying land at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Within a few hours of the crash, Rep. Norma Torres (D-Calif) was able to determine that "President Trump bears the full weight of responsibility for this tragedy. The fact that this crash came so quickly following the Senate's confirmation of the appointment of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense is a telling sign that Trump's cabinet nominees are dreadfully unqualified for the jobs to which they are being appointed." "I am sorry to say that this tragedy is...

A small medical transport plane has crashed into several buildings in north-east Philadelphia, setting homes and vehicles ablaze and injuring people on the ground. The jet was on a medical transport mission on Friday evening and carrying four crew members, a child patient and the patient's escort, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, a medical aircraft company, said in a statement. "We know that there will be loss," Pennsylvania Gov Josh Shapiro said during a news conference at the scene of the crash, calling it an "awful aviation disaster". Emergency crews rushed to the evening crash scene as residents crowded streets littered...

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R), a physician-turned-politician from deep-red Louisiana, has emerged as a central figure in the confirmation fight over Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Over the course of six hours in two hearings, Cassidy indicated he holds serious doubts about whether Kennedy is qualified to lead the agency, casting a cloud of uncertainty over Kennedy’s path to confirmation. “I have been struggling with your nomination,” Cassidy told Kennedy at the end of Thursday’s Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing. He said the pivotal question is if Kennedy will...

The Five Eyes is the most powerful spying alliance in history. Forged in the conflagration of World War II, the intelligence-sharing pact among the U.S., Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand helped defeat Nazism and Communism, fend off al Qaeda and Islamic State and shield its members from the ever-growing risk of cyberattacks. Now former and serving members of the Five Eyes and outside experts say it is facing its biggest challenge ever: President Trump’s pledge to curb the “Deep State” by overhauling America’s vast intelligence apparatus. Trump left the Five Eyes alone during his first term and hasn’t named...

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is warning that Contec CMS8000 devices, a widely used healthcare patient monitoring device, include a backdoor that quietly sends patient data to a remote IP address and downloads and executes files on the device. Contec is a China-based company that specializes in healthcare technology, offering a range of medical devices including patient monitoring systems, diagnostic equipment, and laboratory instruments. CISA learned of the malicious behavior from an external researcher who disclosed the vulnerability to the agency. When CISA tested three Contec CMS8000 firmware packages, the researchers discovered anomalous network traffic to a...

Chinese tech company Alibaba has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that it claims outperforms its rivals at OpenAI, Meta and DeepSeek. The announcement of the Qwen2.5-Max model yesterday (Jan. 29) is the second major AI announcement from China this week, after DeepSeek's R1 open-weight model took the world by storm following claims that it performs better and is more cost-effective than its American competitors. Now, Alibaba claims that Qwen 2.5-Max, which is also partly open-source, is even more impressive — surpassing a number of rival models in various tests run by the company. "In benchmark tests such as...

There's a new Sheriff in town. Trump is not Biden and everybody knows it. see link

After an internal Q&A with CEO Mark Zuckerberg made headlines over the tech tycoon’s pro-President Trump commentary, Meta threatened to fire staffers for leaking information to the media — in a memo that then also got leaked. Meta “will take appropriate action, including termination,” for any leakers, Meta’s chief information security officer, Guy Rosen, said in a memo obtained by the Verge. “When information is stolen or leaked, there are repercussions beyond the immediate security impact,” Rosen said. “Our teams become demoralized and we all waste time that is better spent working on our products and toward our goals and...

Donald Trump made a campaign promise to "immediately bring prices down" on his first day in office. Instead, egg prices have spiked. During her first White House briefing, press secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed former President Joe Biden for hurting the egg supply and driving up costs. Egg prices are expected to continue rising due to a bird flu outbreak, which Biden's Department of Agriculture tried controlling early on by euthanizing infected chickens. Egg prices have risen in the short time since President Donald Trump took office — despite his campaign promise to "immediately bring prices down, starting on day one"...

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has dramatically increased the amount of water flowing from two dams in Tulare County, sending massive flows down river channels toward farmlands in the San Joaquin Valley. Federal records show that water releases from Terminus Dam at Lake Kaweah and Schafer Dam at Lake Success jumped early Friday morning. The sudden increase occurred four days after President Trump said on social media that the U.S. military had “entered” California and “TURNED ON THE WATER.” Trump also vowed during a visit to Los Angeles last week to “open up the valves and pumps” in California...

President Biden’s and President Trump’s pardons have generated a lot of controversy. But there are considerable differences between the two sets of pardons, with a two-tiered system of justice unfairly biased against Jan. 6 defendants. Last month, Biden pardoned his son, Hunter. And then, on his last day in office, Biden pardoned five family members. That same day, Trump pardoned 1,500 people who were convicted or facing trial for the Jan. 6 riot. The media’s coverage of these pardons has been dramatically different. Take the New York Times, which describes Biden’s preemptive pardons as a way to “guard” from a...
