Poland will not recognize Belarus’ upcoming presidential election, scheduled for January 26, upper-house Speaker Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska said on Thursday. She made the statement after meeting in Warsaw with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who is visiting Poland. Kidawa-Błońska called the planned election a "sham," and added that elections cannot be considered free when political opponents are jailed for seeking democracy. She said she hopes parliaments in other European countries will also refuse to recognize the vote. She emphasized the need to hold Belarusian strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko accountable for human rights abuses, insisting he must face consequences for his actions....

When North Korea’s 12,000-strong 11th Army Corps deployed to Kursk Oblast in western Russia to help Russian troops battle an invasion by a powerful Ukrainian force, they brought along anti-tank vehicles, howitzers and rocket launchers. They also brought along a rarely seen air-defense vehicle combining a large wheeled chassis with the radar and missile launchers from a Russian-designed Tor surface-to-air missile vehicle, which normally rides on tracks. The customized North Korean Tor is so unusual that the Russians themselves apparently didn’t recognize it as belonging to their side. On or just before Friday, Russian drones spotted and struck the North...

Moore was best known as half of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame soul duo behind "Soul Man" & "Hold On, I'm Coming." Sam Moore, half of the seminal duo Sam & Dave, died Friday (Jan. 10) in Coral Gables, Fla. The cause of death was complications from surgery. He was 89. Moore, who was revered by artists including Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Garth Brooks and Jon Bon Jovi, had an instantly recognizable tenor, first heard on such call-and-response classics as Sam & Dave’s 1960s hits “Hold On, I’m Coming” and the Grammy-winning “Soul Man,” both of which reached...

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee pushed the confirmation hearing scheduled for Interior Secretary nominee Doug Burgum from Tuesday to Thursday because the chamber has yet to receive required ethics paperwork. Sen. Mike Lee, the panel’s chairman, said Mr. Burgum promptly submitted his paperwork to the Office of Government Ethics, which has yet to complete its review. “This bureaucratic delay is unacceptable,” the Utah Republican said. “To ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of this process, the committee will postpone Governor Burgum’s hearing until Thursday. However, we expect OGE to act with urgency and complete its review without further...

The Senate Armed Services Committee is set to convene Tuesday morning for what is expected to be a closely contested confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth, the veteran and former Fox News host tapped by President Trump for Secretary of Defense. Hegseth’s nomination has created much debate, with Democrats questioning his qualifications and raising concerns over allegations of financial and personal misconduct. However, the results of a routine background check, disclosed Monday morning, appear to provide a boost to his confirmation prospects. Officials involved in the review described the findings as “unremarkable.” For weeks, Democrats have pointed to Hegseth’s limited experience...

Wildfire-ravaged California should not receive a blank check from the federal government for emergency aid, House Speaker Mike Johnson declared Monday. “I think we’ve got to have a serious conversation about that,” Johnson (R-La.) told reporters as the House returned to work following a three-day weekend.“Obviously, there has been water resource mismanagement. Forest management mistakes — all sorts of problems. And it does come down to leadership,” the speaker explained.“It appears to us that state and local leaders were derelict in their duty in many respects. So that’s something that has to be factored in. I think there should probably...

An incumbent Democrat narrowly won re-election to the state’s highest court. But the Republican-controlled court is considering an unusual protest from her challenger that could flip the result.Heath Clay, a city councilman in Summerfield, N.C., left the voting booth last fall feeling that this was the most secure election he had ever voted in, partly because of a North Carolina law that requires both in-person and mail-in voters to show proof of identity. Mr. Clay, a registered Republican, had done just that. But then someone told him troubling news: Jefferson Griffin, a Republican candidate for the State Supreme Court, was...

Western wildlands beset with increasingly severe fire seasons, including in California, would do well to follow the example of the nation’s Southeast and increase use of preventive prescribed burns, according to a newly published study. Prescribed, or controlled burns, consume brush and other combustibles to reduce the fuel available to a random fire that might occur during more adverse heat and wind conditions, and thereby, reduce the chance of it taking off. “We’re Not Doing Enough Prescribed Burns in the Western United States to Mitigate Wildfire Risk,” is the title of the study, authored by Crystal Kolden, PhD, Associate Professor...

Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry is blaming “greedy” insurance companies instead of California Democrats for people losing their homes and not having fire insurance. “Watching a daughter use a garden hose to try and protect her 90-year-old parents’ home because their insurance was canceled was just gut-wrenching to me,” Perry wrote on Instagram. “Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich on?” “People who have paid premiums all of their...

In a long and wistful blog post titled ‘Reflections’ Sam Altman, the mercurial CEO of ChatGPT creators OpenAI, has said that he believes we will achieve AGI (artificial general intelligence, also known as superintelligence) "as we have traditionally understood it" in 2025 with the release of the first AI agents joining the workforce. He says: “We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it. The ACF – which awaits a decision on its own waiver request from EPA, expected in the remaining days before the end of the Biden administration – is a similar set of runways and regulations to move the state’s truck fleet toward ZEVs. But the ACF is targeted at vehicle buyers, not manufacturers. The ACT technically went into effect on Jan. 1, 2024. But enforcement was put on hold while the waiver request made its way through the EPA. The degree of attention that the ACT has been getting nationally stems from the numerous states that have decided to follow...

An international team of geophysicists using a new imaging technique that measures the speed of seismic waves caused by earthquakes to locate the juncture of tectonic plates in the Earth’s mantle say they have discovered the remnants of what appears to be a “lost world” beneath the Pacific Ocean. Previous methods to locate these junctures between tectonic plates have always found them where scientists expected them to be. However, this latest joint effort by geophysicists from ETH Zurich and the California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech) found indications of these zones at locations that display no indications of tectonic plates...

In California or Cuba, Karen Bass has no regard for the welfare of the people. “Dick Van Dyke, Cher and Barbra Streisand are among thousands of Malibu residents who have been forced to abandon their homes as a fast-moving brushfire rages through Southern California,” reported the New York Post on December 10, 2024.
