Sam Altman predicts artificial superintelligence (AGI) will happen this year

In a long and wistful blog post titled ‘Reflections’ Sam Altman, the mercurial CEO of ChatGPT creators OpenAI, has said that he believes we will achieve AGI (artificial general intelligence, also known as superintelligence) "as we have traditionally understood it" in 2025 with the release of the first AI agents joining the workforce. He says:

“We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it. We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents “join the workforce” and materially change the output of companies. We continue to believe that iteratively putting great tools in the hands of people leads to great, broadly-distributed outcomes."

While that may sound like bad news for people whose jobs it replaces, it would be a big jump forward for the AGI timeline. I previously interviewed Dr Ben Goertzel, who predicted that humanity would develop AGI by 2029.

Alan Thompson, an expert in artificial intelligence and former chairman of Mensa International, runs the Conservative Countdown to AGI web page, and has increased the countdown to achieving AGI as 88% complete in light of Altman’s latest comments, along with the release of Nvidia Cosmos for training humanoid robots.

They just need that one line code that is currently missing that will case AI to constantly improve. Once they have that, it will leap a 1000-fold in 20 years and probably surpass us in its capability.

I don’t view this as a good thing, even if the powers at be do think it’s a good thing.

Still unanswered is what will the working force do with all of these suddenly ‘unessential’ but still quite able people?
Where will all that energy and focus go to?

Most people in the western culture need a strong sense of purpose in order to be fulfilled. They need proof that their efforts matter.
Participation trophies will quickly be seen as such, and not matter in the same way as a job would do.

We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it.

Keywords: "as we have traditionally understood it". Real human intelligence is far from being reproduced by any machine/computer technology, and may never happen. Many have even talked about computers getting intelligence higher than humans; I say, not possible.

Snake Oil salesman, like Jensen Huang. Generative AI is far from AGI.

I was reading a comment recently by a doctor who uses AI extensively in his practice. His comment was something like, "AI will not replace doctors, doctors who use AI will replace those who don't."

The same might be said for many other professions. People who use it will replace those who don't.

It will probably be “intelligent-like.”

Things like the Turing test will be hopelessly outdated in determining if something is intelligent.

This will break down into determining if an intelligence has a “soul.”

Computational ability is not mental ability.

Whatever value judgement the computer is able to command, it is only because someone programmed it in, say, Bill Gates.
