Ron Wyden, Republican Texas Rep. Roger Williams and Democratic Kentucky Rep. Morgan McGarvey’s portfolios also saw double-digit increases,...

Frigid air that normally stays trapped in the Arctic has escaped, plunging deep into the United States for an extended visit that is expected to provoke teeth-chattering but not be record-shattering. It’s a cold air outbreak that some experts say is happening more frequently, and paradoxically, because of a warming world.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D), who was on a trip to Ghana when fire engulfed large portions of the city, cut nearly $20 million from the city’s budget for fire services for the current fiscal year — and proposed even higher cuts. As the Westside Current reported in April 2024, Bass proposed about $23 million in cuts to the fire department: Significantly, the proposal — described by Bass a “reset” — includes $65 million in cuts to her signature Inside Safe homelessness] program; an increase of more than $138 million for the Los Angeles Police Department; and a decrease...

Using this method, the probe could potentially reach the star system in decades. Proxima centauri, captured by Hubble. Image credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA A team of physicists has outlined a possible way of sending probes deep into interstellar space within a reasonable timescale, using relativistic electron beams. Space is that annoying combination of "really cool" and "really big". We can see really awesome stuff going on out there, but unless we come up with ways to significantly improve our propulsion methods, we aren't going to be taking a look at them any time soon. Traveling at the speed of Voyager,...

Newly declassified CIA files have shed light on the extent of the agency’s notorious MKUltra program, a series of mind control experiments conducted during the Cold War era. On December 23, the National Security Agency (NSA) declassified a total of 20 documents spanning over 1,200 pages, shedding light on covert CIA activities conducted between 1953 and 1964. This covert initiative involved a staggering 144 projects that explored the use of drugs, psychological torture, and sensory manipulation to alter human behavior. CIA Deputy Director Allen Dulles spearheaded the initiative, justifying it as a response to perceived threats from Soviet and Chinese...

France’s top diplomat fires a warning shot across the bows of Donald Trump, warning Europe considers Greenland part of its “sovereign borders” and should be left alone. European leaders are reacting with alarm as past and future President Donald Trump talks up the importance of the United States acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island and a strategically valuable if underdeveloped Arctic territory in the North Atlantic. As Trump’s son flew into Greenland on the Trump jet this week the French foreign minister has appeared to tacitly put the notion of the United States buying territory off an ally on a...

Projection is blaming someone else for your own bad behavior. We saw a classic case of projection in Thursday’s presidential debate, when President Biden—who is overseeing annual budget deficits of $2 trillion—asserted that his predecessor, Donald Trump, added more to the federal debt than anyone else. It’s part of the latest leftist argument: that if Trump wins the election, he will run deficits twice as large as Biden would. Debate moderator Jake Tapper joined the chorus of federal finance falsehoods when he claimed Trump had “approved $8.4 trillion in new debt,” while Biden’s actions will increase the debt by (merely)...

Starmer started the political meddling over in the states. Now he's on the run, with Elon Musk crunching into the seat of his pants. Not too long ago, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a radical Labour leftist, stood by a number of fellow Labour Party members spewing out statements that President Trump was a "racist" and a "fascist" and "KKK member" who must be "stopped at all costs." That was before the election. That wasn't the half of it, though. Starmer's Labour Party put its money where Starmer's mouth was, dispatching 100 Labour Party political operatives like flying monkeys to...

The grounds of the Getty Villa caught fire on Tuesday as a blaze continued tearing through the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades. The museum and its staff were not harmed, according to a statement issued today by the Getty, which said that the Getty Villa will remain closed through January 13. “Irrigation was immediately deployed throughout the grounds Tuesday morning,” the statement said. “Museum galleries and library archives were sealed off from smoke by state-of-the-art air handling systems. The double-walled construction of the galleries also provides significant protection for the collections.” The Getty Villa is one of the two...

NATIONAL ENGLISH TOFFEE DAY On January 8th, National English Toffee Day celebrates a favored confection that's been enjoyed across the country for generations.
