The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) cannot reveal weather forecasts from a particularly accurate hurricane prediction model to the public that pays for the American government agency – because of a deal with a private insurance risk firm. The model at issue is called the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP) Corrected Consensus Approach (HCCA). In 2023, it was deemed in a National Hurricane Center (NHC) report [PDF] to be one of the two "best performers," the other being a model called IVCN (Intensity Variable Consensus). A 2020 contract between NOAA and RenaissanceRe Risk Sciences, disclosed in response to a...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The future was once dazzling for IronNet. Founded by a former director of the National Security Agency and stacked with elite members of the U.S. intelligence establishment, IronNet promised it was going to revolutionize the way governments and corporations combat cyberattacks. Its pitch — combining the prowess of ex-government hackers with cutting-edge software – was initially a hit. Shortly after going public in 2021, the company’s value shot past $3 billion.,,, IronNet’s rise and fall also raises questions about the judgment of its well-credentialed leaders, a who’s who of the national security establishment. National security experts, former...

The dental health benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water may be smaller now than before fluoride toothpaste was widely available, an updated Cochrane review has found. The team of researchers reviewed the evidence from 157 studies which compared communities that had fluoride added to their water supplies with communities that had no additional fluoride in their water. They found that the benefit of fluoridation has declined since the 1970s, when fluoride toothpaste became more widely available. "Most of the studies on water fluoridation are over 50 years old, before the availability of fluoride toothpaste. Contemporary studies give us a...

Intrepid journalist Alex Berenson recently dissected a much-undiscussed study from last June that, ostensibly, points to higher asthma rates developed in vaxxed versus unvaxxed children post-injection as the takeaway — until one, as he did, digs deeper into the data for a much bigger and damning conclusion. After being infected with COVID-19, the study concluded, 4.7% of unvaxxed children developed asthma versus 8.3% of vaxxed children who developed the condition – nearly double the rate in the vaxxed vs. unvaxxed. Via Infection (medical journal) (emphasis added): “Two cohorts of children aged 5 to 18 who underwent SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing were...

Texas law enforcement raided a vacant San Antonio apartment complex that had fallen under the “control” of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, which was using the building as a base for crime, officials said. SAPD had received several complaints from the apartment complex regarding narcotics, human trafficking and threats to apartment personnel, according to police. “We had information that members of the transnational...

More than a dozen bacterial species among the hundreds that live in people's mouths have been linked to a collective 50% increased chance of developing head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), a new study shows. Some of these microbes had previously been shown to contribute to periodontal disease, serious gum infections that can eat away at the jawbone and the soft tissues that surround teeth. The new analyses looked at the genetic makeup of oral microbes collected from healthy men and women. Of the hundreds of different bacteria that are routinely found in the mouth, 13 species were shown...

A joint Egyptian-German archaeological mission from Sohag and Berlin Universities has discovered the burial chamber of a woman named Edi, daughter of Jifai-Hapi who was governor of Assuit in Upper Egypt during the reign of King Senusret I of the 12th dynasty (1991–1778 BC).The discovery was made during excavation work carried out on the father's tomb in Western Assuit Mountain, which is considered the largest non-royal tomb from that period in ancient Egypt."Preliminary studies suggest that Edi died before reaching the age of 40 and suffered from a congenital foot defect," said Mohamed Ismail, Secretary General of the Supreme Council...

For adults with symptomatic lumbar disc herniation, unilateral biportal endoscopic (UBE) microdiscectomy is associated with longer operating times and with lower pain medication consumption in the early postoperative period compared with tubular lumbar microdiscectomy, according to a study Charla Fischer, M.D. and colleagues examined surgical outcomes and pain medication consumption for UBE versus tubular lumbar microdiscectomy in a retrospective cohort study of adults undergoing primary, single-level UBE or tubular lumbar microdiscectomy surgery at a high-volume institution. Data were included for 102 patients: 48 undergoing UBE and 54 tubular lumbar microdiscectomy. The researchers found that the average operative time was higher...

Tonight, Donald Trump made his return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where less than three months ago, an assassin tried to take his life ... and came within less than an inch of doing so. You can say what you want about Trump, but the man has onions made of titanium. As Teamsters President Sean O'Brien said when he spoke at the Republican National Convention, Trump is one tough SOB. You're not going to get any argument from us on that point. BUTLER ON SATURDAY—HISTORIC! pic.twitter.com/S8WhiNdWph — Donald J. Dear Friend of GATA and Gold: In this week's edition of Kinesis Money's "Live from the Vault" program, London metals trader Andrew Maguire outlines what he says are the many bullish drivers of the gold price. He says Chinese central bank buying remained strong this week though retail buying was absent because of the "Golden Week" holidays. Indian central bank buying remained strong as well, Maguire says. Using price charts, Maguire says central bank buying is steadily driving up the gold price in calculated stair steps that prevent the physical market from becoming too disorderly. Now that the BRICs nations...
