SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said it is investigating what led to a man defending himself against two armed suspects. Officers received a call about a man who was shot just before 3:50 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Ranch Valley Drive. Police later learned that a second man arrived at a nearby hospital who was shot in the waist. However, after further investigation, authorities said both men were armed and involved in a robbery attempt of a 34-year-old man. During the robbery, SAPD said the 34-year-old man pulled out a weapon and fired at the men in...

Incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris closed out what was already a terrible week with a desperate flail trashing 13 Gold Star families that then blew up spectacularly in her stupid and incompetent face. First, let’s review the last seven days. As I said last week, Kamala Harris is running a terrible presidential campaign. After six of the best weeks any presidential candidate has ever enjoyed, six weeks filled with billions and billions of dollars in free corporate media cheerleading and propaganda, it all fell apart at the Democrat National Convention.

Actress Selena Gomez surprised students at a Colorado high school to support a local volleyball team who publically pleaded for the actress to attend. Gomez made the unannounced visit at Telluride High School over the weekend while she was in town to promote her movie “Emilia Pérez” and students posted a bright orange sign asking her to perform the national anthem — suggesting two potential times between Aug. 30 and Aug 31. “They asked!! Couldn’t help it, it’s my first time in Telluride!” ... The “Only Murders in the Building” actress posted a carousel of the event with a video...
  • Gov. Newsom calls special session to address high gas prices

Governor Gavin Newsom called lawmakers into a special session Saturday to address spikes in gasoline prices. The move follows pushback Newsom received on a request to approve a series of bills that would cut energy costs for Californians and require petroleum refiners to maintain a stable inventory. Across the nation, Californians pay the highest rates for gas at an average of $4.64 a gallon for regular unleaded, compared to the national average of $3.33, according to AAA. Electricity bills in the state have also nearly doubled in the last decade and are expected to keep outpacing inflation through 2027 as...

CHICAGO, Wednesday, Aug. 31. The National Democratic Convention reassembled at 10 o'clock this morning. The Wigwam is again densely packed, and the crowd outside is greater than ever. Immediately after the convention had been called to order, a prayer was offered up by Rev. Dr. HALSEY, of Chicago. Mr. WICKLIFFE then rose and said that the delegates from the West were of the opinion that circumstances may occur between now and the 4th of March next for the Democracy of the country to meet in convention again. He therefore moved the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That this...

ROME — Pope Francis has consecrated his monthly prayer intention to “the cry of the earth” this September, urging Christians to feel the earth’s “pain.” “If we took the planet’s temperature, it will tell us that the Earth has a fever,” the pontiff contends. “And it is sick, just like anyone who’s sick.” But are we listening to this pain?” he asks. “Do we hear the pain of the millions of victims of environmental catastrophes?” he continues. “The ones suffering most from the consequences of these disasters are the poor, those who are forced to leave their homes because of...

The decades-long push led by tribal communities to remove four dams along the Klamath River reached another victory this week as crews began the project’s final stages, restoring historic water flows to the river for the first time in over a century. The fight to remove dams along the Klamath began over two decades ago, when poor water quality and river flows caused tens of thousands of the river’s fish, mostly Chinook salmon, to die in a massive fish kill in 2002. For thousands of years, Chinook salmon have been a fundamental source of physical, spiritual and economic sustenance to...

X, the social-media giant owned by Elon Musk, has officially been banned in Brazil. Last night, X failed to meet a deadline set by a Supreme Court judge to block vast swathes of content and appoint a local legal representative for the company. It has now gone offline to its 22million Brazilian users – roughly one tenth of the national population. The Brazilian elites loathe X for precisely the same reason as the elites across the rest of the democratic world do – they blame it for the spread of so-called disinformation, particularly since it was taken over by Musk...

According to a Phys.org report, a team of archaeologists, historians, geologists, and physicists led by José Antonio Lozano Rodríguez of the Canary Islands Oceanographic Center and the University of Alcalá examined the Menga dolmen, a megalithic monument built in what is now southern Spain some 6,000 years ago, to learn more about how it was constructed. The structure consists of stone walls topped with a stone ceiling supported by stone pillars. Some of these stones weigh more than 160 tons. The researchers suggest that the stones were quarried about one-half mile away and transported to the site on sledges dragged...

  • Leadership dispute continues as Dave Williams supporters vote Saturday to keep him as Colorado GOP chairman

Members of the Colorado Republican Party central committee voted by an overwhelming margin on Saturday to keep Dave Williams as the state GOP's chairman — contradicting an equally lopsided vote a week earlier to fire Williams at a meeting called by the former state lawmaker's opponents within the party. Neither outcome was a surprise, since only a handful of Williams' supporters attended the meeting last Saturday at a church in Brighton, while a similar small number of Williams' critics showed up to vote at this weekend's gathering at a church in Castle Rock. The two meetings were virtual mirror images...

I’m starting this report with a discussion of the word “strategic” in relation to its use in the Russo-Ukraine War. There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of the word, and almost everything the Russians try to take is instantly labelled strategic (which the opposite seems to be the case for Ukraine. Moreover, we have some interesting reports coming in this morning of what might actually qualify as a strategic campaign (though it will get less coverage that a village in the Donbas). A Russian power generation facility on fire, north of Moscow. There remains a fundamental failure to understand...

Daily Readings from the USCCBWhen the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. Mark 7:1–2What a foolish thing for these Pharisees and scribes to be concerned about! They were in the presence of the Son of God, the Savior of the World, a man of perfect virtue and pure goodness, and all they could do was to observe that some of Jesus’ disciples failed to follow the scrupulous teaching on how they should wash their hands before a meal....

Following its stress test earlier this year, the Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday announced final individual capital requirements for all large banks, effective on October 1. Large bank capital requirements are informed by the Board's stress test results, which provide a risk-sensitive and forward-looking assessment of capital needs. The table shows each bank's common equity tier 1 capital requirement, which is made up of several components, including: The minimum capital requirement, which is the same for each bank and is 4.5 percent; The stress capital buffer requirement, which is based in part on the stress test results and is at...

According to Google Maps, I live 39 miles from The White House. Looking at the region around the White House, I’ve thought about what might be a mascot for what Donald Trump and his supporters call The Swamp. How about Polyphemus, the one-eyed Titan from Homer? Another contender might be Medusa, the snake-haired hottie who turns those who look at her into stone. A more modern contender for The Swamp mascot might be Jabba the Hut from the Star Wars series. A vote for Donald Trump this November is a vote to “drain the swamp.” For those of you unfamiliar...

My stance on the Second Amendment is simple: I’m not going to take anyone’s guns away. I believe in the Constitution. But Americans need to work together to figure out why we have mass shootings every 21 hours. Something changed around the time of the Columbine shootings in 1999, and it wasn’t the number of guns in America. The National Institutes of Health refuses to investigate the mystery; in fact, Congress prohibits the NIH from researching the cause of mass shootings. Under my administration, that rule ends — and our kids’ safety becomes a top priority.
