Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign has fired roughly a dozen staffers — and more are expected in the coming weeks as he shakes up his big-money political operations after less than two months on the campaign trail. Those who were let go were described to NBC News by a source familiar as mid-level staffers across several departments whose departures were related to cutting costs. The exits come after the departures of David Abrams and Tucker Obenshain, veterans of DeSantis’ political orbit, which were first reported by Politico. DeSantis has $12 million in the bank, but of that $3 million can be...

Mark Skage rescued a baby moose from the side of a busy highway in British Columbia, Canada. He was consequentially fired by his employer, AFD Petroleum Inc., who let him go for breaking wildlife protocols. 'I just couldn't do it, in my heart … Black bears are the number one predator for those calves,' Skage said to CBC. 'So I just thought, 'Well, I can't take care of the predator, but I guess maybe I can try and help out this little calf.' Skage told CBC News that he noticed the calf alone on the side of the road, with...

The remaining 25 percent of those responding to the survey either expressed no clear opinion or simply stated that they didn't know. Similar sentiments were found among those aged 35-44. Back in 2008, a journalist asked Ringo Starr what he wanted for his birthday. “Peace and love,” Starr replied. Ringo is so beloved that, these days, every July 7, social media is filled with “peace and love” tags for Ringo’s birthday. Ringo — one of the few “one name” celebrities — was 68 that year (he’s 82 now). He brings his still youthful stellar musicianship, along with his “All Starr” band, to Benaroya Hall for an Oct. 11 concert. (Starr tested positive for the coronavirus and had to cancel and reschedule several stops on his tour this week. As of...

Failing the New York State teachers’ exam really paid off — especially for a Queens man who learned this month he’s getting a $2 million windfall over it. Roughly 5,200 black and Hispanic ex-Big Apple teachers and once-aspiring educators are expected to collect more than $1.8 billion in judgments after the city stopped fighting a nearly three-decade federal discrimination lawsuit that found a certification exam was biased. It’s the largest legal payout in city history. As of Friday, 225 people who failed the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test used for teacher licensing from 1994 to 2014 had already been notified...

Cardinal-designate Pierre called to help people have 'a personal encounter with Jesus'I was not expecting that. But I immediately understood, because I had already had the experience, when I was in other countries like Mexico, of phoning a newly made cardinal. So I knew that it was not fake news.I'm quite happy (about the appointment), to be honest. But on the other hand, I measure the responsibility. It is a great sense of trust, and I see the repercussions.Spiritually, I think you feel a great responsibility, because this is about the church. It's not about me. All my life, that...

There seems to be no way to get certain desired exe files (apps) to show up in the "All Programs" list in the Windows 10 Pro Start Menu. (This is common to Win 7 also, I believe, and perhaps earlier OS's as well.) I can add such exe's* to the Start Menu "tiles" in Win 10 Pro, but not to the "All Programs" list. This seems quite odd, but maybe I'm missing something? *Examples of such apps / exe files are "IV_Player" (Irfan View Player, a very handy & lightweight media file player), as well as "Wavosaur", a handy and...

ATTITUDE Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, and where they had been on vacation. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit...

Warren Buffett's wife reportedly balked at the $4 cost of a coffee at Sun Valley. Astrid Menks' reaction aligns with her husband's approach to life, investing, and dealmaking. Buffett lives simply, seeks value as an investor, and strikes a hard bargain when he cuts deals. Warren Buffett detests high inflation, and it appears the billionaire's wife does too. Astrid Menks balked at paying $4 for a cup of coffee at Sun Valley this week, noting she "could get a pound of coffee" for that price in other places, the New York Post reported on Thursday. Her reaction won't surprise close...

Cardinal Müller Berates His SuccessorAs FSSPX.News has already mentioned, reactions – often negative – to the appointment of Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez as Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) are multiplying. Of particular note is that of Cardinal Gerhard Müller, who has expressed deep skepticism about his successor.“The task of the dicastery, in the service of the papal magisterium, is to show how the doctrine of the faith is biblically founded, how it has developed in the history of dogma. . . . The Pope and bishops cannot demand obedience for their private opinions, and...

On this date in 756, the imperial consort Yang Guifei was expediently executed during the An Lushan Rebellion. The Tang dynasty Emperor Xuanzong, whose beloved concubine Yang was, undertook this cruel extremity only in great duress. Initially married to one of the emperor’s sons, Yang so enamored the emperor that he usurped the prince’s place and got the kid a different wife. In the c. 800 classic poem “Song of Everlasting Sorrow” the poet Bai Juyi mused on the smitten sovereign rushing headlong into waiting tragedy. The emperor neglected the world from that moment, Lavished his time on her in...

In a historic move, a Jan. 6 prisoner has taken his challenge of the infamous obstruction charge, levied against him and hundreds of other Jan. 6 prisoners and defendants, all the way to the Supreme Court. On July 7, attorneys for Jan. 6 prisoner Edward Jacob (Jake) Lang filed a document with the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) challenging the government’s obstruction of Congress charge—one of the most common felony charges used against Jan. 6 defendants—which carries a 20-year prison sentence. “We filed what’s called a writ of certiorari, or a request to the Supreme Court to hear...
