Parents and taxpayers need to know what’s going on in the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD). As an English teacher employed in the SMSD for 15 years, I can no longer stay silent about the state of our schools. I will be attacked and threatened, but for the good of our district and the students with whom we are entrusted, I must speak out. This is too important. Amidst a worsening teacher shortage that saw SMSD pay $3.5 million to out-of-state agencies to recruit and retain more educators, we are losing good teachers because of an imposed divisive rhetoric that...

A jury found that a McDonald's in Florida and its franchise owner are liable after a hot Chicken McNugget led to second-degree burns on a girl after it fell from a Happy Meal and landed on her leg. A split jury determined last Thursday that the franchise owner of the McDonald's in Tamarac was negligent and that McDonald's USA failed to warn customers about the heat risk of its food, according to the Sun Sentinel. McDonald's USA was not found to be negligent, and the jury dismissed the argument that the Chicken McNuggets were defective. Holmes said her daughter began...

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said on Sunday that the Palestinian Arab “resistance organizations” succeeded, through their joint operations room, in taking the reins of the military initiative in managing the "revenge of the free people" campaign against Israel and thwarting its attempt to impose a new equation. In a statement published following the end of Operation Shield and Arrow, Haniyeh said that the resistance organizations proved their ability to stop the "arrogance of the occupation" in its attempt to differentiate the Islamic Jihad in the military campaign and to drive a wedge between the Palestinian Arab resistance organizations. In the...

For the past half-century or more, manufactured scares have been a recurrent part of life. Every year a very small number of people are killed (usually only 1) or injured by bears here in Hokkaido, Japan. However, the news media invariably plays up these incidents. As a result, for a few weeks every year some hiking trails in Sapporo are ritually closed off to the public after some bear sightings. Many people I know have a great fear of bears, though the actual risk of being killed by a bear is extremely small. Their chances of dying in a bathtub...

This week, the week of The Ascension, I turn my attention down from the fatherly sky to the motherly earthly foundation of what we are. Men, women and children need to live with love. This love is an indispensable foundation of human society. The modern western demonisation of men and disempowerment of mothers are two sides of the same coin. The cradle of human culture is maternal love. When family life ceases to be a nation’s foundation, the nation’s death is inevitable. In that spirit, I hope the above articulation of gender principles can evolve to become incantations of value...

I am facing a large bill in a few months for a prescription drug that my doctor says I need. My insurance is currently charging me $131 per 3 months. However, the drug costs the insurance company nearly $2,000 per 3 months. In July this charge will push me into the Medicare Part D "donut hole" gap, and I will have to pay nearly $500/3 month. I cannot afford that. I am thinking my best bet for lower prices is a reputable source outside the USA, such as a pharmacy in Canada, such as Claymans Pharmacy. Does anyone have experience...

Explanation: What would it be like to fly free in space? At about 100 meters from the cargo bay of the space shuttle Challenger, Bruce McCandless II was living the dream -- floating farther out than anyone had ever been before. Guided by a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), astronaut McCandless, pictured, was floating free in space. During Space Shuttle mission 41-B in 1984, McCandless and fellow NASA astronaut Robert Stewart were the first to experience such an "untethered space walk". The MMU worked by shooting jets of nitrogen and was used to help deploy and retrieve satellites. With a mass...
