For motorcycle riders, America’s roads have never been more deadly. That’s not an exaggeration. There were 5,579 motorcycle fatalities in 2020 - the highest number ever recorded. The rise in fatalities also seems to be getting worse. Preliminary estimates indicate motorcycle deaths will pass 6,000 a year once 2021 totals are tabulated.
Key findings:
Mississippi, Texas and Arkansas have the highest rate of motorcycle fatalities
Motorcycle fatalities are up 11% since 2019 and 23% since 2010
Helmet usage declined from 71% to 68% nationwide
Alcohol was involved in 32% of fatalities
To find the most dangerous states for motorcycle riders, our analysts looked at motorcycle fatalities going back to 2001. We found that motorcycle fatalities are heavily influenced by three factors: alcohol, climate and helmet use.

I blame the higher numbers on the flying deer . . .
Although truth and accuracy is not the mode-o-day, wouldn’t it be more accurate to show fatalities as a % of total motorcycle riders in the state to find the safest/most dangerous state for motorcycles?
Deaths are per motorcycle. The highest death rates are in southern states. You think they might drive their motorcycles more per year because of the weather? Duh.
But aside from that, yes the deer and moose around here are out of control. And my freezer can hold only so much of the former.
Another interesting article. It would be interesting to know when the fatality involves a car what percentage of those drivers are impaired. I know in New Mexico, even with low traffic density, it happens a fair amount. (I once rode 100 miles here and didn’t see another vehicle).
The problem can be solved by outlawing 8 simple words from the state vocabulary.
“Hey y’all, hold my bees and watch this.
I’ve lost at least 5 friends. All 5 were legally riding. Everyone heart breaking. Florida.
I rode a lot of miles on a MC.
I have come to believe. That Gro-pros make some MC rides really stupide.
In my part of Texas, one dies about every three weeks. Half the time hit by a car, the other half rounding a wet curve and hitting a tree.
Most all bikes nowadays are equipped with front and rear cameras. It makes it much easier to lawsuit the daylights out of car drivers who can’t seem to pay attention while driving.
In Texas there are multiple fatal car collisions daily.
The problem with motorcycles is no protection from so many idiot drivers no matter how defensively you ride.
About 350,000 miles on motorcycles since I was 17. I still ride about 7-10000 miles per year. Current bike K1300S. It’s a monster.
If you ride a motorcycle more than even a little bit, you WILL fall off or get hit.
That would be the Motorcycle Rider's State Of Stupidity, hands down!
I’ve been a rider for 55 years or so. Anymore it seems like suicide to ride on the road with the idiots out there. I may not sell my 955 Sprint but I’m certainly thinking about getting back into just dirt roads on an enduro style bike again.
I’m 73 and I’ve never seen so many idiots driving cars in my lifetime.
All of them, frankly.
Wrong. An experience, skilled rider can significantly reduce their risks by using defensive skills. Simple thing like slowing down and covering the brakes on approach to intersections, cross streets, or when cars in the left turn bays ready to left turn in front of you, looking both ways even when the light is green etc, etc.
