Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has decided to disband the Parole Unit of his office. This unit, also known as the Lifer Unit, helped keep victims of crime and their family members in the loop for information regarding the potential release of the convicted perpetrators. Gascón previously barred prosecutors from attending parole hearings. Gascón called these steps "part of the healing process. The victims of crime have already suffered enough. Why trigger their anguish by reminding them that the perps who hurt them might be getting out of prison. As far as they know, these convicts were sentenced...

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregonians will decide in November whether people wanting to purchase a gun will first have to qualify for a permit, after one of the strictest gun-control measures in the nation landed on the ballot. The measure would ban large capacity magazines over 10 rounds — except for current owners, law enforcement and the military — and require a permit to purchase any gun. To qualify for a permit, an applicant would need to complete an approved firearm safety course, pay a fee, provide personal information, submit to fingerprinting and photographing and pass a criminal background check....

Even though the Battle of Donbas is far from over, Ukraine is expected to open the next chapter of the war sometime in the near future — a highly anticipated, major counter-offensive operation in the south, particularly to liberate the Russian-occupied city of Kherson. Kyiv has declared its intentions to liberate the only regional capital captured by Russia following the Feb. 24 full-scale invasion. Experts across the world agree that retaking Kherson is the most feasible way for Ukraine to score a major victory over Russia and turn the tide of the war. As part of a counter-offensive operation, Ukraine...

The Biden administration continues to assure that the southern border is 'secure' despite record-setting numbers of illegal crossings and proliferation of the crisis over the last few months. 'Look, the border is secure,' Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Matorkas insisted during remarks at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado on Tuesday. But he added that the administration is still 'working to make the border more secure.' 'That has been a historic challenge,' Mayorkas said, adding that there is a difference between the words 'safe' and 'secure.' But insistence that the border is secure comes amid a prevailing rise...

A long, long time ago – five decades to be exact – America was roiled by wrenching generational showdowns, massive street protests, and a blazing array of social justice movements. Now, half a century later, similar events and dynamics dominate the public conversation. So, perhaps, it’s poetic that precisely five decades have elapsed since a song that captured all that cultural turmoil, American Pie, became a smash hit. “It’s a song that spoke to its time,” said Spencer Proffer, who has produced a comprehensive new documentary about the song, titled The Day the Music Died. “But it’s just as applicable...

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government on Wednesday gave the green light to a new nuclear power station that’s expected to generate enough low-carbon electricity to power 6 million homes. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said development consent was granted for the building of the plant, called Sizewell C, on eastern England’s Suffolk coast. French energy company EDF, which will partly fund the project, has said the plant will generate electricity for at least 60 years and will employ 900 people. The plant will reportedly cost 20 billion pounds ($24 billion). Authorities say the plant will make a substantial contribution toward Britain’s...

His comments came during one of the ministry's regular press conferences which often include barbed responses to accusations against China or other developments. In Tuesday's session, Zhao was asked by Chinese state-run news agency China News Service about last month's opening of the U.S. National Space Intelligence Center (NSIC) and whether it posed a risk to "humanity's overall stability". Whenever anyone in the public eye dies, especially at a relatively young age, it has always been standard journalistic procedure to determine the cause of death. There are inquiries filed, questions asked, and comments requested. Up until recent months we could expect either a detailed report on a deceased celebrity’s health issues or a direct cause of sudden death, whether it was an accident, drug overdose, suicide, or any other reason they met an early demise. Former NFL player Charles Johnson died this week at the age of 50. After allowing nearly 24-hours for corporate media journalists to do their...
