SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregonians will decide in November whether people wanting to purchase a gun will first have to qualify for a permit, after one of the strictest gun-control measures in the nation landed on the ballot.
The measure would ban large capacity magazines over 10 rounds — except for current owners, law enforcement and the military — and require a permit to purchase any gun. To qualify for a permit, an applicant would need to complete an approved firearm safety course, pay a fee, provide personal information, submit to fingerprinting and photographing and pass a criminal background check.
The state police would create a firearms database. Applicants would apply for the permit from the local police chief, county sheriff or their designees.
The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action has denounced the initiative, saying on its website that “these anti-gun citizens are coming after YOU, the law-abiding firearm owners of Oregon, and YOUR guns”.
Oregon appears to be the only state in America with a gun safety initiative underway for the 2022 election, according to Sean Holihan, state legislative director for Giffords, an organization dedicated to saving lives from gun violence.

A firearm safety course is a good thing it would weed out some nuts
These all sound like infringements........
As soon as this idiocy is challenged in court it will fail. They are completely ignoring the decision of the Supreme Court.
Yeah...the unsafe nuts.
It’s an initiative petition. The idiots that signed it don’t know or care about the Constitution.
Police state
So.
Registration, which is always the prelude to confiscation. OF ALL FIREARMS.
A permit system. FOR ALL FIREARMS.
Oregon, you can go to hell.
EVERY FREEDOM LOVING AMERICAN NEEDS TO READ - AND SHARE - THIS MAGNIFICENT LETTER THE AG IN “THE SHOW ME STATE” SENT TO THE FBI!
Actually, he went beyond “Show Me” and deeply into “STICK IT” territory!
Bravo!!!!

And will the penalty for violating this new set of laws be enforced equally?
Awesome letter.
How much of this initiative conflicts with the recent Supreme Court decision? Will it matter? (Okay, stupid question.)
This alone should disqualify the measure. Those things would require separate initiatives.
The bill also seems to ban all private private transfers. You have to go to a dealer who does the permit/background check.

Except as provided in ORS 166.436 and 166.438 and subsection (4) of this section, a transferor may not transfer a firearm
to a transferee unless the transfer is completed through a gun dealer as described in subsection (3) of this section.
(3)(a) A transferor may transfer a firearm to a transferee only as provided in this section. Except as provided in paragraph (b)
of this subsection, prior to the transfer both the transferor and the transferee must appear in person before a gun dealer,
with the firearm and a valid permit-to-purchase issued to the transferee under section 4 of this 2022 Act, and request that
the gun dealer perform a criminal background check on the transferee.
How moronic. Do these people never learn??? I’m guessing it’s already illegal to shoot and kill people in Oregon.
1. The Supreme Court just reaffirmed the 2nd Amendment, specifically “own and BEAR arms, shall not be infringed.”
2. The Greenwood, Indiana shooting occurred in a “safezone” by by a guy carrying an AR-15 style rifle loaded with a 30 round magazine and carrying at least three additional 30 round magazines. Apparently he (and every other shooter) didn’t seem to care about safezones and laws and such.
The lesson from Greenwood, Indiana, is that if we had more good guys trained and carrying, we more than likely would have far fewer mass shootings.
The facts are, you definitely can’t stop shooters by writing more and more gun laws, but you sure as hell can stop them with good guys carrying and willing to protect themselves and others.
What safety measures will criminals have to conform to for their handguns?????????????
People of Oregon...buy your guns and ammo now.
Hey, didn’t SCOTUS just . . .
“The lesson from Greenwood, Indiana, is that if we had more good guys trained and carrying, we more than likely would have far fewer mass shootings.”
And the hero that shot the nutball perp had no permits or special training and was carrying under the new CC law.
He was just 22 yrs old and dispatched the dirtbag faster than most trained police officers.
