Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine was a story of blunders. Moscow is now making steady progress in Donbas. Russian troops advanced to within several kilometres of the road leading from the city of Bakhmut to Lysychansk and Severodonetsk. The advance has made other Ukrainian positions untenable. Ukrainian forces pulled out of the town of Svitlodarsk, which until then constituted the south-eastern anchor of their foothold in Donbas. “We couldn’t hold them there [anymore],” says Yuri, 58, the unit’s commander. The amount of firepower hitting their positions further drives the disparity home. “We were on the frontline last week,” Artyom says....

Market participants are facing serious restrictions on logistics, insurance and payment for grain, according to the Rusgrain Chairman Eduard Zernin, who said that the union had to turn to the central bank to avoid supplies being disruped. Since March 10, Russia has exported 28.1 million tons of grain, including 23 million tons of wheat, which is about 30% lower compared to the same period in 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture reported. Kansas City police shot a black woman who was reportedly pregnant multiple times as they searched for a stolen vehicle on Friday. Authorities say officers in two cars were following up on a call about an armed carjacking just before 8pm on Friday, after dispatchers provided the officers with a description of the vehicle and license plate. The officers then apparently spotted the vehicle with two suspects inside at the parking lot of a Family Dollar store at Sixth and Prospect Avenues in Kansas City, and approached it. At that point, authorities say, the male driver fled northeast as two...

A law enforcement source said that the former federal agent regularly stoked the accused gunman Payton Gendron with racism, anti-Semitism and other propaganda designed to inflame the deranged man. “These were like-minded people who used this chat group to talk about their shared interests in racial hatred, replacement theory and hatred of anyone who is Jewish, a person of color or not of European ancestry,” the law enforcement source stated. “What is especially upsetting is that these six people received advanced notice of the Buffalo “The FBI has verified that none of these people called law enforcement to warn them...

In the far future, we could reveal detailed views of distant worlds by turning our home star into a gravitational lens Diagram showing a conceptual imaging technique that uses the sun’s gravitational field to magnify light from exoplanets. This would allow for highly advanced reconstructions of what exoplanets look like. We now know of more than 5,000 exoplanets beyond the solar system. What we really understand about each of these worlds, though, is barely anything at all. Most of them have been seen only indirectly from their shadows as they cross in front of the stars they orbit. The...

Florida police released the mugshot of the 10-year-old boy they publicly arrested and perp walked for allegedly threatening a mass shooting at his elementary school. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, who touts himself as Florida's 'law and order sheriff,' defended publicly exposing the juvenile by saying 'a child pulling a trigger equals the same aftermath.' He warned scientists to use caution in using the practice of METI, or “Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence” for fear it could provoke an alien invasion. But Caballero conceded that the odds of extraterrestrials wiping out the human species is about the same as the planet being destroyed by a “global catastrophe asteroid.” He wrote that such an event takes place once every 100 million years, so humans are in all likelihood safe for the time being.

It was supposed to be a clear-cut, unambiguous invasion. Vladimir Putin’s much larger, richer, and more bellicose Russia staged a shock-and-awe attack on a much smaller, poorer Ukraine. He intended to decapitate the government in Kyiv. Then he would annex the eastern half of the country, and quickly consolidate his easy wins in preparation to ratchet up pressure to force western Ukraine into the Russian Federation. The rest is history. The Russian military proved ill-equipped and ill-supplied. It was poorly led, with a high percentage of low-morale, conscript troops. Russia had no viable strategic plan to capture, much less hold, the...
