As activists mobilized this summer to ask Minneapolis voters to replace their police department, one of the first prominent Democrats to slam the plan was a moderate congresswoman who doesn’t even live in the city. Angie Craig declared it “shortsighted, misguided and likely to harm the very communities that it seeks to protect." She warned that it could push out the city's popular Black police chief. Craig's district covers a suburban-to-rural and politically divided region south of the city, but her willingness to jump into the fight next door highlights the political threat that Democrats like Craig see in the...

AGUA FRIA, Panama (AP) — In an isolated cemetery in Panama’s Darien province, migrants who die crossing the most treacherous segment of their journey toward the United States are buried with a plasticized card containing what little information is available about them in case one day someone comes looking. Well duh, said Zoe, can you 'splain that to me again? With pictures? How do you get rid of a problem? Here's an example, rather raw, so skip it if you have tender sensibilities. When I was in college, I was told this story by a young man who was a Philadelphia Main Liner. For those who don't know, the Main Line towns in Philly were premier homes of aristocratic U.S. bluebloods, bastions of old money, or as old as it is in the United States. This young man was so aristocratic that he actually had three last names, so family...
