Panama to bury more migrant victims of the brutal Darien Gap

AGUA FRIA, Panama (AP) — In an isolated cemetery in Panama’s Darien province, migrants who die crossing the most treacherous segment of their journey toward the United States are buried with a plasticized card containing what little information is available about them in case one day someone comes looking.

On a recent afternoon, white-suited workers laid to rest 15 sets of remains in a long trench at the back of the cemetery. A local priest standing at the head of the trench with a candle, crucifix and flowers performed a simple ceremony. On the white body bags were handwritten clues: “Unknown in Bajo Grande,” “Unknown in Turquesa river,” and “Unknown #3, Minor.”

So far this year, Panama has recovered at least 50 sets of remains from migrants crossing the Darien Gap, a number officials believe is only a portion of those who died in the dense, lawless jungle. In recent years, 20 to 30 bodies on average have been recovered annually, but this year Panamanian authorities say more than 90,000 migrants — mostly Haitians — have crossed the Darien Gap from Colombia and the body count reflects that surging migration.

Looks like they are coming up from Columbia, the Darien province is in Southern Panama on the border.

Panama is not known for friendly jungles, the terrain is steep, hilly, dense, and vicious. There are black palms with 6" spikes that impale on contact, bees and ants come looking for you, then attack.

More blood on Biden's hands.

Support for open borders is fully bipartisan in nature.

He’s the head of the party of caring.

He doesn’t have to worry.

The media is on it.

But Biden invited them as part of his campaign overturning Trump’s wall.

Not steep, hilly, dense and viscous enough, most of them are getting through.

Answering the call of the Amnesty Senators.

When I was a lad in the 50s, My Weekly Reader promised that we’d soon be able to drive from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego on the Pan-Am Highway. There is still no highway from South America to Panama (which before 1903 was considered to be South America since it was a part of Columbia).

The Darien Scheme almost bankrupted Scotland around the year 1700.

IIRC, the missing stretch of the Pan American Highway in the Darian Gap has not been completed because of the illegal migration that would occur into Central America and beyond.

That could be a reason, but the Weekly Reader articles I was referring to were written well over a half century ago—before mass illegal migration became a thing. I think the hostile geography plays an even bigger role. That and the Darien Gap has some ‘interesting’ people living/doing business there.

A married couple made that drive in an amphibious jeep back in the 50s, and wrote the book 20,000 Miles South about the trip. It’s years since I read it, so I don’t remember if they had to go by train or boat to get past the Darien Gap. I do remember that they decided not to try to take their vehicle out into the ocean because of weather.
