Darien Gap is one of the most dangerous places in the western hemisphere.

When I was a lad in the 50s, My Weekly Reader promised that we’d soon be able to drive from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego on the Pan-Am Highway. There is still no highway from South America to Panama (which before 1903 was considered to be South America since it was a part of Columbia).

IIRC, the missing stretch of the Pan American Highway in the Darian Gap has not been completed because of the illegal migration that would occur into Central America and beyond.

A married couple made that drive in an amphibious jeep back in the 50s, and wrote the book 20,000 Miles South about the trip. It’s years since I read it, so I don’t remember if they had to go by train or boat to get past the Darien Gap. I do remember that they decided not to try to take their vehicle out into the ocean because of weather.
