Tristen Hunter was 16 and preparing to leave foster care in Juneau, Alaska, when a social worker mentioned that the state agency responsible for protecting him had been taking his money for years. In the years that followed, he was owed nearly $700 a month in federal survivor benefits, an amount based on Social Security contributions from his mother's paychecks. He doesn't remember Alaska's Office of Children's Services ever informing him that it was routing this money...

If everything goes according to plan, China will become the only country other than the United States to ever leave the solar system, and the probes themselves will be just the sixth and seventh interstellar objects launched from Earth, according to the Houston Chronicle. As the Houston Chronicle notes, the border between the heliosphere and interstellar space sits about 100 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Therefore, crossing that threshold will give China’s space agency the ability to study the space between stars firsthand, giving it a better understanding of the galaxy.

The sharks are back roaming along the Cape shoreline. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy on Thursday reported its first basking shark sighting off Provincetown’s Herring Cove Beach this season. Although great white shark sightings are increasing every year along the Cape, they are not the only large shark off the Massachusetts coast. The basking shark is the second largest fish in the ocean, and is often confused with white sharks, especially as their large dorsal fin often can be seen above the water. There are some key features that can help differentiate the two sharks, including the shape of that...

Many conservatives voiced skepticism about the 85% number quoted by CBS News following Joe Biden's speech. In France this week, 20 retired military generals, 80 officers, and 1,000 lower-ranking soldiers signed an open letter expressing concern over “mortal dangers” they say face the Republic. President Macron’s government has instructed the army chief of staff to discipline the signatories for inciting insurrection. Although the signatories warn they wish to act only after the outbreak of civil conflict, Macron’s response shows the government understands the situation has already deteriorated to a point where a true coup or uprising—an event quite unlike the shambolic ordeal in Washington on January 6th—might erupt at the slightest provocation. At the same time,...
