  • Tories on course for landslide majority - latest results and news

    12/12/2019 8:10:32 PM PST · by edwinland · 62 replies
Boris Johnson is on course for an historic landslide victory in the 2019 general election after an exit poll predicted an 86-seat Conservative majority The Tories are predicted to win 368 seats – 50 up on 2017 – in their best result since 1987. On a catastrophic night for Labour, Jeremy Corbyn’s party was predicted to end the day with just 191 seats, down 71 on the last election in their worst result since 1935. If the prediction proves to be correct, it will mean the Prime Minister can forge ahead with his plan to get Britain out of the...

Ken Livingstone said tonight's brutal election result is "the end" for Jeremy Corbyn - and appeared to blame "the Jewish vote" for contributing to the losses. The former Labour MP and Mayor of London, said his friend and ally Jeremy Corbyn had paid the price for several aspects of his campaign, including not taking more action against anti-semitism. "The Jewish vote wasn't very helpful," Mr Livingstone said "Jeremy should have tackled that issue far earlier than he did. "It looks like the end for Jeremy, which is disappointing for me since I'm a close ally. I'm sure he'll have to...

  • UK Election results 2019: Tories take Labour seats as they head for comfortable majority

The Tories have taken a string of former Labour strongholds, as an exit poll suggests they are set to win the election with a comfortable majority. Labour have lost seats in the north of England and Wales in areas that voted Leave in the 2016 EU referendum. The results point to the BBC/ITV/Sky exit poll suggesting a Tory majority of 86 as being broadly accurate, although most seats have yet to declare. Labour are set to win 71 fewer seats than in 2017, the exit poll suggests. The Scottish National Party have made their first gains of the night, taking...

Washington (AP) — Donald Trump wants more than acquittal. He wants vindication. With impeachment by the House appearing certain, the president has made clear that he views the next step, a trial in the GOP-controlled Senate, as his focus. The president sees the senators not just as a jury deciding his fate, but as partners in a campaign to discredit and punish his Democratic opponents. His Senate allies aren't so sure that's a good idea. In recent weeks, Trump has devised a wish list of witnesses for the Senate trial, relishing the opportunity for his lawyers to finally cross-examine his...

You probably haven’t heard about a recent regulatory decision that will reduce carbon emissions because it doesn’t follow the green template of controlling private industry and suppressing economic growth. Last week the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the first time extended a nuclear plant’s license so it can operate for 80 years. The decision for the Turkey Point reactors in south Florida could encourage other plant owners to apply for renewals and extend the viability of the leading carbon-free energy source. A majority of the 58 nuclear plants now supplying power to U.S. homes and businesses were built in the...

Sen. Mike Lee’s S.386 green card giveaway to India’s U.S.-based workers has created a new opponent: dairy farmers who fear his bill will kill their ability to recruit and reward long-serving dairy workers with U.S. green cards. The result is that South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds will block Lee’s next attempt to pass his giveaway to India via the Senate’s Unanimous Consent rule, which is expected next week. “He is planning to object to a U.C.,” a Hill source told Breitbart News, if Lee cannot “address Senator Rounds’ concerns about dairy farms in South Dakota.” Rounds admitted his concerns in...

CNN's Chief Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin responded to Thursday's House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearing by claiming that "in some ways" President Trump was already triumphant in his battle with Democrats. "You know what struck me about this hearing was how Donald Trump, in a way, has already won," Toobin said while appearing on a CNN panel. "How much did we hear about Hunter Biden? Over and over again about Hunter Biden?" Toobin added, referring to the son of former Vice President Joe Biden. Republicans have continually pointed to the younger Biden in response to the controversy surrounding the president's relationship...

During Thursday’s mark up of the articles of impeachment in the House Judiciary Committee, Republicans unveiled a four-point defense of President Trump that is stunning in its simplicity and blows massive holes in the Democrats allegations of abuse of power. Essentially the Democrats are accusing Trump of shaking down Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky by withholding aid and demanding announcement of investigations, including one involving Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. To this, the central charge in the articles of impeachment, Rep. Jim Jordan and others presented four specific facts. First, both Trump and Zelensky say there was no pressure applied. Second, the...

A Reuters photographer left the House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday after he was accused of taking photos of documents. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) announced that the photographer took pictures of Democratic committee members’ notes during a recess. “We noticed that, announced it to staff, and that photographer has been removed,” he said, when the recess was over. “And I would just say no member Republican or Democrat should be subject to that.” Video of the photographer taking photos at the dias circulated on Twitter, with Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) posting the footage from CNN. A senior adviser to Speaker Nancy...

The state of Washington on Thursday proposed bans on the sale of "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines, part of a package of gun laws meant to address a rising wave of U.S. mass shootings. If successful, Washington would become the seventh U.S. state to ban assault weapons, which it defines as semi-automatic rifles with at least one military feature, and the ninth to limit the capacity of ammunition magazines.

Boris Johnson and the Tories are poised to make gains in Parliament and retain control, according to exit polls from the historic election. Projections show them sitting at 368 of the 650 seats, a 50-seat bump from the 2017 elections. The March for Life aims to foster a culture where abortion becomes “unthinkable.” To that end, Jeanne Mancini, president of the group that sponsors the annual pro-life march in Washington each January, says it will work to draw the public’s attention to the proposed Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. The legislation stipulates that if a baby survives an attempted abortion and draws breath, the abortionist or clinic would be required to take the baby to a hospital, rather than leaving it in a closet to die, as happened in one well-documented case. “Determining the proper treatment is for medical professionals...

Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands has sued over an Alaska law it says limits who can provide abortions. The lawsuit, filed Thursday, alleges a state law and Board of Nursing policy bar advanced practice clinicians from providing early abortion and miscarriage care that they are qualified to provide. This restricts access to abortion and other gynecological care "without medical justification" and violates the rights of women, the lawsuit alleges. Department of Law spokeswoman Maria Bahr said by email that the department will review the complaint when it receives it and "respond in due course to...
