Realizing that a shooting war with American citizens would not bode well for an Obama legacy which will already require a blanket guarantee of willful amnesia on the part of historians, the president’s handlers on Wednesday decided it best to propose an Executive ban on gun owners rather than on the guns they own. If fact, nowhere in the list of 23 executive actions recommended by Obama will the American public find the words, “these weapons will be banned” or “confiscation will begin on…” The president wisely left the heavy lifting of “assault weapons” bans and other unconstitutional offensives on...

Thousands of Sunnis rallied Friday in western and central Iraq, denouncing the Shiite-led government’s policies they claim sideline their sect and saying that recent concessions by the authorities are not enough. The protests—the fourth Friday in a row of rallies in Sunni parts of the country—come as tensions are rising among Iraq’s ethnic and sectarian groups, threatening to plunge the country into more instability. … Sheik Hassan al-Samarie, one of the organizers of the Samarra rally, said the Sunnis there are disappointed by the slow response of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government in fulfilling their demands. “We are fed up...

ORLANDO, Fla. - The defense team for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman charged with shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, has received Martin's school records, but won't release it to the public, according to the defense website. Zimmerman's attorney, former Local 6 legal analyst Mark O'Mara, writes on GZLegalCase.com that Martin's records are protected and shouldn't be part of the public record. "A number of parties have expressed concern that we will use information found in the school records to “demonize” Trayvon Martin," O'Mara writes. "The Zimmerman defense has no intention to demonize Trayvon Martin. While we believe that George...

CLARK COUNTY, Nev. — Official Washington has the collective attention span of a fruit fly. This condition is exacerbated by the Obama administration's proclivity for declaring selective events and issues to be crises that require immediate action. The problem is aggravated because the loyal opposition is in nearly total disarray, and few in the so-called mainstream media have any idea what they are talking about. That's the summary assessment of many attending the annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show here in Harry Reid's Nevada. Note to editors and broadcast producers: The SHOT Show isn't a gun show. Nobody here can...

"The Gun Is Civilization" by Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret) Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it. In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction and the only thing that removes...

WASHINGTON - Archaic, bloated, duplicative, wasteful, inefficient government is like the weather. People complain about it but no one's figured out how to change it. I took some comprehensive, well-received whacks at the problem in several books in the 1980s, one of which was "Fat City - How Washington Wastes Your Taxes." It focused on waste and wantonness in more than a hundred agencies, programs and other back-water bureaucracies, costing more than $100 billion a year, which cried out to be terminated, downsized or sold on the auction block. That was big money then, but it wouldn't even dent the...

A woman in southern Sweden has been charged for attempted assault after attacking a man with a frying pan full of Swedish sausages. The woman, who is in her fifties, reportedly threw the frying pan at the man during a heated spat at their home in Borås, southern Sweden. She even threatened to kill the man, according to Sveriges Radio. While the flying frying pan didn't hit the intended target, the man was hit with the force of the pan's contents - Swedish Falukorv and a good dose of grease. The man was not injured by the Swedish sausage. The...

Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a Republican who is on a talking tour to publicize his proposals for an immigration overhaul, said on Thursday that tighter enforcement at the borders and in workplaces would be central to his plan, which would also offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants. In a meeting in New York with reporters and editors of The New York Times, Mr. Rubio said that any broad immigration legislation should create a nationwide exit system to check foreigners out of the country, to confirm that they left before their visas expired. He noted that at least...

Every year he grows more ceremonial, distant, symbolic, less alive. It is the fate of heroes. Their pictures are relegated to banners, their words become clichés, their very names become streets and boulevards instead of a living presence. Icons. Washington, Lincoln, Lee, Martin Luther King. . . . Our familiarity with them may not breed contempt exactly, but a kind of boredom, and indifference. Haven't we heard it all before? Maybe, but have we listened before? How long has it been since we've really heard his words and felt their force? And their continuing, insistent relevance. Instead our heroes become...

Schadenfreude's a bitch, isn't it? When Jacque Chirac was president, the French did everything they could to torpdeo our efforts in Iraq. They refused to send troops to fight Saddam and continuously opposed us in NATO councils. Now, suddenly - France needs help in Mali. And no one is lifting a finger to help them. "The French aren't alone, they are the trailblazers," he said, after European ministers approved a contingent of more than 200 military trainers for Mali. He added: "It is completely possible - but this is up to them - that others or the same European countries...

Attorney General Eric Holder and his Department of Justice have (asked) a federal court to indefinitely delay a lawsuit brought by watchdog group Judicial Watch. The lawsuit seeks the enforcement of open records requests relating to Operation Fast and Furious, as required by law. [snip] The administration has refused to comply with Judicial Watch’s FOIA request, and in mid-September the group (filed a lawsuit) challenging Holder’s denial. That lawsuit remains ongoing but within the past week President Barack Obama’s administration filed what’s called a “motion to stay” the suit. Such a motion is something that if granted would delay the...

Alfred E. Newman, meet Paul Krugman. Less than a week after the Treasury reported that the US was on its way to a fifth straight trillion-dollar annual budget deficit, the New York Times columnist and Nobel Prize winner says we're worried about nothing. The deficit problem, Krugman assures us, has been "already, to a large degree, solved."Did I miss the space invaders? This is, however, a case in which what everyone knows just ainÂ’t so. The budget deficit isnÂ’t our biggest problem, by a long shot. Furthermore, itÂ’s a problem that is already, to a large degree, solved. The medium-term...

Hamas is once again trying to punish the residents of Gaza by attempting to reduce the scope of Israeli goods entering the region. Hamas' Ministry of Economics announced this week its decision to ban the import of certain types of goods into Gaza through the Israeli crossings. These include office furniture, various types of foods, hygiene products, gas pipes, plastic, plastic bags and clothing. The local population in Gaza expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision, especially since the Israeli products that enter Gaza are considered to be of much higher quality than the goods that are smuggled into Gaza from...

President Obama's plan, announced Wednesday, to curtail gun violence in the wake of recent mass shootings is drawing both criticism and praise in the gun-loving state of Texas. The president is calling for Congress to implement background checks for all gun purchases and to ban certain assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Republican Gov. Rick Perry said the president's plan "disgusts" him and that it is an effort by the political left to use the killings to accomplish an anti-gun agenda. He called for prayer and a rejection of evil, as opposed to gun regulation. But Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, said...

DETROIT — Government bureaucrats who think they know best what people should buy and drive need to spend some time at the Detroit auto show. If they did, they’d see that people spend about as much time looking at hybrid and electric cars as they do flossing. That was evident again Monday when the international media descended upon Cobo Center to kick off the North American International Auto Show. They flocked to the new Corvette Stingray and kicked a lot of truck tires. Ram Power Wagon Occasionally, someone stopped to see what was plugged in. Therein lies the state of...

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Republicans appear to be willing to avoid a showdown over the debt limit and instead use the sequester as their main negotiating lever in upcoming fiscal fights with the White House and Senate Democrats. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Republicans at a closed-door retreat in Williamsburg were weighing a short-term increase in the country’s borrowing limit, giving all sides time to work on a broader fiscal plan in March that would include substantial spending cuts. “Sometimes you’ve got to lay down a sacrifice bunt,” said Rep. Dennis Ross of Florida about the debt ceiling...

RIVERDALE — Pictures of a man carrying a rifle inside a big box store in Riverdale are raising a lot of eyebrows. The woman who took them tells KSL the man had no business bringing the gun where he did. It was supposed to be just a regular trip to the JC Penney. Wednesday night, Cindy Yorgason was in line to return something when she saw a man with some pretty heavy fire power. "He had the assault rifle over his shoulder," Yorgason said. "He had a handgun on the right side of his belt along with at least one...
