  • Two Followups From Obama's Healthcare Speech

Powerline today ran two articles that I thought deserved a wider audience. The first one shows that Obama's healthcare speech Wednesday gained some added support, but that a majority of Americans still oppose Obamacare. The second article concerns an admission by the White House that Rep. Wilson was right - Obamacare will cover illegal aliens unless specific steps are taken to prevent that from happening. Only the most gullible will believe that liberal Democrats will not find a way through decisions by government regulators or by subsequent amendments to have Obamacare cover illegals and government-paid abortions.

South African police will have a shoot to kill policy at next summer’s World Cup in a bid to cut gun crime. The war on weapons is called Operation Wanya Tsotsi, which translates as: “You will soil your pants, criminal.” Deputy minister of police Fikile Mbalula warned armed criminals that officers were entitled to open fire at them. He said: “If you are a criminal and you are gun-toting, our message to law enforcement officers is clear – shoot to kill.” “We say we are going toe to toe, tooth for tooth, nail for nail with the criminals. Street by...
  • Teen pleads guilty to pit bull attacks

A 16-year-old pleaded guilty today to one count of second-degree assault, one count of third-degree assault and one count of being a minor in possession of alcohol for siccing her pit bull on two women in June in SeaTac. The girl entered the pleas after prosecutors amended the information to increase the seriousness of one of the assault charges from third- to second-degree based upon the seriousness of the injuries suffered by one of the victims. The girl was prosecuted as a juvenile so we are not naming her. Under juvenile sentencing guidelines, the girl faces a standard sentence of...

Just after 8:00 Friday morning, a pit bull allegedly attacked a 10-year-old boy waiting for the school bus. Witnesses then saw the resident of a nearby home, 22-year-old Dustin Anglin, grab the dog and leave. The dog warden arrived on scene minutes later. Dave Nelson, acting Mahoning County Dog Warden says, "I was able to make contact and he advised me that he only has one dog and that it's a poodle. The evidence is telling me, people say he put the dog inside the basement." Anglin, at first, refused to return to help with the investigation, so the dog...

Representative Bart Stupak isn't the type to yell "You lie!" while the president is addressing a joint session of Congress. But according to the soft-spoken pro-life Michigan Democrat, Barack Obama isn't telling the full truth when he says, as he did last Wednesday night, "no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions" in the congressional health care plan. "There certainly is public funding for abortion" in the House bill, Stupak told me the day after Obama's speech. The bill would allow both the public health insurance plan and federally subsidized private plans to cover elective abortions. Stupak has asked...

  • Honduras' interim president: US revoked my visas

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Honduras' de facto president said Saturday that the United States has revoked his visas to pressure the Central American country to reinstate ousted leader Manuel Zelaya, exiled in a June 28 coup. Roberto Micheletti said losing his diplomatic and tourist visas would not weaken his resolve against Zelaya's return. Honduran interim Information Minister Rene Zepeda told The Associated Press that the government expects the U.S. to revoke the visas of at least 1,000 more public officials "in the coming days." Last week the U.S. cut off millions of dollars in aid to the Honduran government in response...

German anatomists plan a new show dedicated solely to dead bodies having sex as part of the Body Worlds exhibitions. "Switzerland is the first country that already said from the outset that we could show whatever we wanted," said von Hagens. "Zurich is ready ... but it's maybe not so easy in every other town," he said. "We have discussed whether it is proper to show homosexuality and in what way. This is a very delicate subject." Von Hagens and Whalley said they both intended to donate their bodies for plastination, but would not leave instructions about how to display...

Joe Wilson brought a taste of the summer’s contentious health care town halls to the floor of Congress Wednesday night, and on Saturday thousands of fired-up conservatives are planning to bring some of that anger to the streets outside the Capitol. Borrowing tactics more familiar to protestors on the left, they’re pouring into the Washington area in hundreds of buses, newly engaged grassroots activists who plan to march down Pennsylvania Avenue and voice their mounting displeasure with their government. Their issues are a hodgepodge, ranging from the bank and auto bailouts to President Obama’s push to overhaul the nation's health...

Its Spoken Language Fading, Buton Tries a Script From Seoul That Has Global Ambitions SORAWOLIO, Indonesia -- In an elementary school here on the remote Indonesian island of Buton, a teacher named Abidin recently began to show students how to write their endangered native language -- in the Korean alphabet. Mr. Abidin carefully copied some Korean letters from a textbook onto the blackboard and asked his fourth-grade class what they spelled in their Cia-Cia tongue, a Malayo-Polynesian language related to others spoken across Indonesia. "I eat fish," they replied in unison. The students know little about Korea, 3,500 miles north...

To the other authors who have done a stellar job of remembrance today, I say thank you. It was a somber walk thru those times, and a moving memorial. Yet on this day mourning the loss of loved ones, revisiting the vunerability we felt, and even the anger that still lives in many of us, there is a spot of good news that may give you a small smile. For the second year running, top jihad sites affiliated with Al Qaeda have mysteriously started exhibiting "technical problems" on the eve of 911, forcing the militants to shut down and lose...

Why on earth is the crowd set back 50 eet from the speakers? Why is it that the crowd sounds like there's only 13 active people there and everyone else is asleep? It's much too civil and docile. A conservative woodstock.... hmmm... I'm not sure. I like the hip-hop guys on right now, it just feels like they're playing in a empty warehouse.

A poll of Massachusetts voters showed a hefty majority (56%) opposed to a bid by former Red Sox pitcher and World Series hero Curt Schilling for the US Senate seat vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy. Only 21% said they favored a run by Schilling. “He’s not a Kennedy,” said one poll respondent. “Nor is he a Democrat. He doesn’t even have a DUI or sex scandal to his name. He just doesn’t seem to have the kind of life experience we look for in a senator for our state. Maybe if it could be shown that he used...

It's about "fighting socialism" in our own country What are the demographics of today's Protesters Against Obama Care rallying in the Nation's Capitol? The Wall Street Journal offers a hint from two of their embedded reporters. They road with a group of Tea Partiers all the way from Florida. From Michael M. Phillips and Naftali Bendavid of the WSJ: The 54 riders on the Tallahassee bus provide a window into the new conservative energy. On the road, they listened to reminiscences of President Ronald Reagan's life, including his battle against Soviet-style communism. It is a fight they say must now...

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of people from across the country arrived here Saturday to demonstrate against what they say is an ever-expanding intrusion of government in their lives in a culmination of a summer-long season of protests that began with an opposition to health care and grew into a broader dissatisfaction with Washington. A sea of people stretched along Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House on a cloudy and cool day, with scores of hand-written signs telling of their frustration. They sang verse after verse of patriotic songs like “God Bless America,” even as others shouted...
