WASHINGTON Tens of thousands of people from across the country arrived here Saturday to demonstrate against what they say is an ever-expanding intrusion of government in their lives in a culmination of a summer-long season of protests that began with an opposition to health care and grew into a broader dissatisfaction with Washington.
A sea of people stretched along Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House on a cloudy and cool day, with scores of hand-written signs telling of their frustration. They sang verse after verse of patriotic songs like God Bless America, even as others shouted angry criticisms of President Obama and Congress.
I want Congress to be afraid, said Keldon Clapp, 45, an unemployed marketing representative who recently moved to Tennessee from Connecticut after losing his job. Like everyone else here, I want them to know that were watching what theyre doing. And they do work for us.
As Mr. Obama traveled to Minnesota on Saturday to rally support for his health care plan, he flew over the crowd in Marine One. The helicopter could be seen flying overhead as the demonstrators made their way toward Capitol Hill from downtown Washington.

And Obama is the biggest tabloid freak of all time.
The New York Times has been alerted - Americans are united and The New York Times has NOT been paying attention - but they better start because no one cares about them or their propaganda anymore (not that we’d trust them at this point in time).
Watching this just makes me so proud to be an American! They won’t be able to ignore us much longer. If they do, we’ll be back, with pitchforks and torches!
I suddenly got a chill. Someone leave a window open?
Handwritten signs. Not seas of pre-printed signs!
in a culmination of a summer-long season of protestsThis isn't a "culmination", it's barely the beginning.
The police declined to provide a precise crowd estimate, but the demonstrators filled the west lawn of the Capitol and stretched for block after block and onto a portion of the National Mall. The authorities urged protest organizers to begin marching 20 minutes early, because the crowd was too large to fit in Freedom Plaza near the White House.
Tens of thousands? NYT is trying to appear unbias while trying to marginalize the scope of this protest.
The day I give the NYT credit with true reporting is the day there’s a clearing house of staff and replaced with real journalists.
It's seems balanced but it's not.

IT'S NOT WHAT WE SAY, IT IS WHAT IT IS!!
shocked to see this in the NYT. Even the idiot moderate GOP writers and libertarian writers I have seen are calling this and other protests ‘anti-Obama’ and extremists. Obama just happens to be the titular head of ever expanding big government, and is the target because this is what he represents. His agenda is all anti free market and pro government central planning, and the protests are fighting those ideas.
It's seems balanced but it's not.
Interesting. It may be the end of the NYT’s world. Check their P&L.
At the rally they were estimating a million and a half.
I’m loving hearing it described in the order of “President was flying away as crowds descend on Capital Hill”, LOL!
that began with an opposition to health care and grew into a broader dissatisfaction with Washington.
This started with the stimulus bills, not the healthcare debate. They can't even get the easy facts right.
