Obama and ACORN: Barack Obama has publicly denied ever working for ACORN in his career as a “community organizer.” In 1992 Obama got one of his first “community organizing” jobs with an outfit called “Project Vote” as its state organizer for Illinois: “Sneed hears a massive voter registration drive on the South and West sides is being conducted by Gary Gardner, president of Soft Sheen products, Joe Gardner, former strategist for Mayor Harold Washington, and Barack Obama, a state director of Project Vote, a national voter registration group.” – Chicago Sun Times, August 2, 1992 So what was “Project Vote”...

More prescient words were never spoken by a politician than Barack Obama's to the American people Wednesday evening on the issue of health care reform: "I am not the first President to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last." For 60 years, Democrats have been trying to force a government health care system on a deeply skeptical American public, without success. And if President Obama fails this time, it's unlikely we'll see another attempt anytime soon. But despite the president's recriminations, he has only himself to blame. The president could have used his primetime public...

Democratic leaders at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue continue to battle over whether a new government-run health plan, modeled after the popular Medicare program for seniors, must be included in health-reform legislation. President Barack Obama told a New Hampshire town-hall meeting last month that "if we're able to get something right like Medicare, then there should be a little more confidence that maybe the government can have a role." Did the government really get Medicare right? Here are the top 10 reasons this program should not be a model for reform, and why it would be dangerous for the federal...

NASA has released this terrible image of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, as captured by Frank Culbertson—the commander of the International Space Station at the time. His words that day: Our prayers and thoughts go out to all the people there, and everywhere else. Click on the image to zoom in. You can see downtown Manhattan—south, where the towers were—, with the East River and Brooklyn on the top, and the Hudson and New Jersey on the bottom. In the anniversary of the attack, let's take a few minutes to reflect on the stupidity of all violence,...

Bernard L. Madoff's massive fraud stunned some of the wealthy denizens of Malibu Colony, especially when a couple devastated by the scheme surrendered their oceanfront home to Wells Fargo Bank. But some neighbors say the real shocker came when they saw one of the bank's top executives spending weekends in the $12-million beach house and hosting eye-catching parties there. What's more, Wells Fargo spurned offers to show the property to prospective buyers, a real estate agent said.

NEW YORK (AP) - Some of the world's most prominent technology companies are offering suggestions to publishers on how they can charge readers for news online. IBM Corp., Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp. and Google Inc. - a company some newspapers blame for helping dig their financial hole - responded to a request by the Newspaper Association of America for proposals on ways to easily charge for news on the Web. But building the infrastructure for charging readers is one part of the equation. The other part looks more challenging: getting publishers to make the leap and stop giving news out...

UNrealistic by: Sarah Carlsruh, September 11, 2009 The Heritage Foundation recently hosted a book release for ConUNdrum: The Limits of the UN and the Search for Alternatives. Is the United Nations more trouble than it is worth? According to editor Brett Schaefer, it might well be, but it sure isn’t going anywhere. Consequently this book is not about whether or not the UN should exist. It’s about how the UN can be made better and, failing that, when to use it versus when to give it a wide berth. As Heritage Foundation President Edwin J. Feulner said, it’s about “what...

(McDonald’s buys millions of pounds of hoki each year for Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. Now, conservationists say the New Zealand fish is being depleted.) Ever wonder what kind of fish end up in a Filet-O-Fish sandwich? The answer is usually hoki, a bug-eyed sea creature found deep in the Pacific waters of New Zealand. But it turns out that exporting millions of pounds of the fish each year -- McDonald’s alone at one time used 15 million pounds annually -- is depleting the hoki supply and pitting conservationists against commercial interests. “We have major concerns,” said Peter Trott, the fisheries program manager...

In Memoriam - September 11, 2001 For Americans old enough to think for themselves on September 11, 2001, that date will mark the day when the whole world changed - in the twinkling of an eye. Adults will try to explain to children not yet born just how the events of that day and the world's reaction to those events shaped the world they grow up in. Before we make that new world, we need to see if we can learn from history, try not to repeat it and try to do a better job of extending the breadth and...

HARARE (AFP) – President Robert Mugabe on Friday lashed out at Western sanctions against him, condemning "bloody whites" for meddling in Zimbabwe's affairs, on the eve of a landmark European Union visit. "Who said the British and the Americans should rule over others? That's why we say down with you. We have not invited these bloody whites. They want to poke their nose into our own affairs. Refuse that," he said. "We have stood stood firm and we have refused to let go. Zimbabwe, sanctions or no sanctions, Zimbabwe remains ours," he told a gathering of his party's youth wing....

September 11, 2009 Set aside Joe Wilson's bad manners what about the substance of his accusation? Mr. Wilson claims that various Democratic proposals wending their way through Congress will use U.S. taxpayer dollars to further subsidize health care for illegal immigrants. Democrats say this is not true, and the back-and-forth continues like this: .....

GOP gubernatorial candidate Charles Baker runs a charity that’s funded ultraliberal outfits which have fought for tuition breaks and driver’s licenses for illegals, accused American soldiers of torture and blamed Israel for “genocide” in Palestine, a Herald review found... The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, of which Baker is chairman, has given $30,000 to the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition since 2002, records show. The agency is a driving force on Beacon Hill for immigration reform, including pushing a controversial bid to allow illegal aliens to pay the same tuition rates as Massachusetts residents at state colleges...

Joe Wilson wasn't the only Republican who was fed up with Obama's dishonest, partisan speech Wednesday. Rep. John Shimkus walked out on Obama's speech, as reported by Mark Silva of the Chicago Tribune's Washington Bureau Swamp blog. "Congressman Shimkus was frustrated that the president was not offering any new ground and left with just minutes remaining in the speech,'' spokesman Steven Tomaszewski said today. Many conservatives love this sort of acting out, because they have the same impulse. Joe Wilson, while condemned by the Dems and their media lapdogs, is a hero to many activists. Others, like AT's Ethel C....

Conservatives and other parents won their point. President Obama dropped his lesson plan for the schoolchildren of America. He didn't ask what they can do for him, as he first intended to do, but what they can do for themselves and country. "We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect, so you can help solve our most difficult problems," he said. "If you don't do that -- if you quit on school -- you're not only quitting on yourself, you're quitting on your country." Nobody can argue with that. The furor that preceded the...
