I am a boater in Califonia out in the Pacific pretty often. I can tell you the Coast Guard and Military carry out thise exercises all the time out here. Most of the time they are actually live fire exercises and you can hear the Coast Guard and Navy broadcasting the prep for these exercises on the VHF Radio.

But choosing THIS day and THAT location was a bad idea.
My first thought was that maybe there was a threat on the wire and they set up this 'training exercise' as a display to show anyone who wanted to try something they were there.
I agree. I drove right there today after the exercise. I could see a USCG helicopter flying at about 500 feet, right over the highway next to the Pentagon, and the area where the POTUS was this morning.
I could even see the door gun on the chopper.
Bad timing. Bad day for it.
The “Coasties” are great people,though, and there should be more of them.

there was a failure to communicate
on the part of the Secret Service.The USCG should have been protecting the POTUS, not training.

Yerp...you'd think somebody would have read the After Action Review from the Navy training exercise they conducted at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1942.

I yacht as well. Rescue ops are daily see them all the time going to and from Catalina Island however there are no live fire exercises in the 12 mile limit.
