UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - United Nations officials found vials of dangerous chemicals, which had been removed from Iraq a decade ago, in a U.N. building in New York, but U.N. officials said on Thursday there was no danger. The FBI was called in to help remove the substances. The material was phosgene, a chemical warfare agent, U.N. spokeswoman Marie Okabe told a news conference. The inspections unit said in a statement that the chemicals had been found last Friday. The Iraqi weapons inspectors came across the material as they were closing their offices, which are housed in a building near...

BOGOTA (Reuters) - A U.S. congressman said on Thursday he meant no offense when he hoisted himself onto the lectern of Colombia's lower house to address his Andean colleagues, some of whom were offended or simply amused by the faux pas. Colombian newspapers carried pictures of Rep. David Dreier, a California Republican, sitting on top of the wooden podium and talking with local legislators on Tuesday while on an official visit.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The CNN cable television news network said on Thursday it would stop using the Reuters news service, ending a 27-year relationship, to contain costs and invest in its own news gathering operations. The global television news network owned by the world's largest media company, Time Warner Inc (TWX.N: Quote, Profile , Research), said in an internal memo that it wanted to reduce reliance on agency material while achieving better control of its growth. "This is all about us, not Reuters. This is about content ownership," CNN spokesman Nigel Pritchard said. "Everything is changing and content ownership...

That Hillary Clinton -- what a card! According to an email I've received from her campaign, Hillary is really venturing into the lion's den, with TV appearances scheduled tonight on Letterman and on September 4 on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Daring stuff! In any case, according to the email: Ellen is soliciting questions from her viewers to ask of Hillary, and we want to turn it around on her. So if you have a question for Hillary to ask Ellen, submit it here. Such a prankster, that Hillary. Wild 'n crazy stuff! Sure, go ahead and submit a question to...

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson's advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier. Thompson's move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson's failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites. Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate - with him in it - would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.

A north Texas woman says a pair of made-in-China flip-flops she bought from Wal-Mart severely injured her feet. Taylor Vanover said she bought the flip-flops because they were cheap and that she developed a serious and painful rash after wearing them. "It hurts, it's irritating, very irritating," Vanover said of the rashes on both her feet that she said follow the exact design of the flip-flops she bought in Gun Barrel City in June. "It itches it burns it tingles. It started out as just like a normal looking rash, and then it's progressed into that, where the actual rash...

BERKELEY -- With more than 72,000 people expected to converge on Cal's Memorial Stadium on Saturday for a sold-out football game, the university on Wednesday erected a chain-link fence to separate fans and the band of protesters living in trees near the stadium. A protest over the fence led to two arrests late Wednesday afternoon after some scuffling with police officers and an impromptu blockage of Piedmont Avenue by protesters sitting in the street. But by Wednesday evening, campus police had relaxed an earlier ruling barring any food, water or supplies being delivered to the tree-sitters. The tree-sitters are protesting...

They spent their childhoods in the rich, layered Jewish life of prewar Poland, then survived Hitler's mission to wipe out European Jewry in the ghettos and gas chambers of occupied Europe. Now, men such as Tad Taube, Sigmund Rolat and Severyn Ashkenazy have returned to Poland as philanthropists — after making fortunes in the United States — to nurture a grass-roots revival of Jewish life in their homeland. And while some Jews in America and elsewhere cannot comprehend why the philanthropists choose to return to a land where their ancestors suffered such pain and loss, members of Poland's Jewish community...

President Bush ordered the opening of all U.S. roads to Mexican trucks in 2002, but the dispute has been tied up in courts. The long fight, begun during the Clinton administration, had ground down to a last quarrel over an environmental assessment, or study, called an EA. Opponents of the truck expansion argued that a particular kind of study was required by law and that the Bush administration was ducking that requirement.

Where are the moderate Muslims who willingly speak out against the Islamist agenda, and why are their voices not heard in the mainstream media? These questions are explored in a documentary that is receiving national exposure over the next several weeks via an Oregon affiliate of the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). Producers and advisors with WETA, the Washington D.C. affiliate of PBS, had previously denied airing the film as part of the "America at a Crossroads Series." Martyn Burke, a Hollywood veteran with ABG films in collaboration with Frank Gaffney, the president and CEO of the Center for Security Policy....

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office arrested nine Colombian men Friday and charged them with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, a sheriff's investigator said today. At least six of the men are being held as illegal aliens, said sheriff's investigator Harry Luke. Additionally, the men are believed to be a part of an organized crime ring that the FBI is linking to roughly 100 robberies of jewelry merchants across the country, Luke said. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office tipped off Putnam officials, telling them about the men's alleged plot to rob two jewelry merchants, Luke said. One of the merchants is...

Arthur Miller, who died in February 2005, [and Inge Morath] had a son born with Down syndrome in 1966. Soon after, they made the painful decision to put the child, Miller’s youngest, in an institution for the mentally retarded before Miller essentially cut him out of his life. Ms. Andrews describes in detail how Miller rarely, if ever, accompanied his wife on weekly visits to see Daniel, almost never mentioned him to shocked friends and didn’t mention him in his memoir, “Timebends.” The picture that emerges is of a father in denial and a son who has moved on to...

How can a woman who claims to be for women’s rights, disregard the rights of so many women who were abused by her husband? Isn’t Hillary a feminist who cares about women’s rights? Perhaps after all the public smearing, threatening, and using the IRS to audit the victims, it appears Hillary can quickly forget the names of the victims of her husband’s abusers, and they are now 'invisible' to Hillary. At a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire when confronted if she believed Juanita Broadderick claims that her husband raped her, Hillary couldn’t recall the name of Juanita Broadderick. Yet...
