Western diets rich in fructose and fat cause diabetes via glycerate-mediated loss of pancreatic islet cells

Those who are habitually inclined to consume burgers, fries and soda may think twice about their dietary choices following scientists' latest findings about high-fat, high-fructose diets.

A team discovered that a high-fat diet can increase fructose metabolism in the small intestine, leading to release of a fructose-specific metabolite called glycerate into circulation. Circulating glycerate can subsequently cause damage of the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells, increasing the risk of glucose tolerance disorders, such as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Past research has shown that fructose produces deleterious effects in the liver. However, additional research has shown that these effects are normally avoided by fructose metabolism in the small intestine; the liver only joins in the metabolic process when fructose levels are excessive.

These paradoxical observations prompted Dr. Shen's group to explore fructose metabolism in the small intestine. Experiments with mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD), along with matched quantities of sugar, resulted in higher fructose metabolism in the small intestine. Higher amounts of the fructose metabolic intermediate, glycerate, were produced in the small intestine and released into the systemic blood circulation. These observations suggest that a HFD can elevate fructose metabolism in the small intestine and increase production of circulating glycerate.

Further support was obtained from patients with a rare disease called D-glycerate aciduria; these patients exhibit abnormally high levels of circulating glycerate. The team's analysis revealed that this abnormality posed a significant and independent risk factor for diabetes among these patients. Additional experiments were conducted. The results indicated that the observed glucose impairments in the glycerate-injected mice were due to a decrease in circulating insulin, rather than insulin resistance. Histologic data confirmed reduced numbers and elevated deaths of the insulin-producing beta cells in pancreatic islet regions in glycerate-injected mice, resulting in decreased levels of insulin.

It appears “smaller” amounts of fructose with a high fat diet did not cause the same pancreatic beta cell death described.

Note that half of the sugar/sucrose molecule is fructose.

For the billionth time, the fat doesn’t cause the diabetes or make you fat.

People can change their diet if they want to. It’s not difficult.

We’ve cut out all sweeteners and gone to high fat. Seems to work fine.

Correction:

Those who are habitually inclined to consume burgers processed meats, fries and soda

Nothing wrong with a wholesome burger.

But hey: 2 out of 3 ain't bad. /s

“High fat” ... depends on the fat. If you want to ruin your health, consume lots of highly refined vegetable seed oils. If you look at a graph of the increasing use of vegetable seed oils (canola, corn, soy, etc.), it correlates almost exactly with increasing heart & other health issues.

To improve health: no sugar, no vegetable seed oils, no processed food (full of sugar & seed oils).

It’s the carbs man. Fat does not make you fat. I am on a low carb, no sugar, high fat diet and I have lost 30 pounds. I feel great. My HBA1C went way down. My cholesterol is low. The misinformation is criminal in my opinion.

Yes & no.

Some can, some cannot. I address the roots of that paradox in my final volume. Someday it will actually be finished and published, if I regain sufficient motivation to help others which - unfortunately under the climate of the past number of years - has been tortuously taxed to death.

We are fortunate to have Fruit in America, however we SHOULD eliminate the Fat Fruits from America.

I agree. I switched to olive oil or avocado oil for sautes and as far as oil for baking, I use an equal amount of either applesauce or pumpkin or squash pure with no change in texture or taste.

The neighbor boys gobbled up a dozen of the Zucchini Muffins I made last week in no time! ;)

“If it is golden brown, put it down”. You can make a huge display of foods that are golden brown, few, if any, are really good for you.

Fat+starchy-carbs+sugar(coke/pepsi)=weight gain. It seems to be the combination. The same combination every fast food chain serves you. I’ll have a burger but without the carbs and sugary drink. I rarely have sugary drinks at all. In tea I use honey. I never experience food cravings anymore. My diet is largely meat, veggies, fruit, nuts, and eggs...the complete opposite to fast food.

By “high fat”, what do you mean? What are your macros and how many calories a day do you eat?

I am used to a burger with no bun, eaten in a plate with a fork. Love one with some fresh salsa or fresh chimichurri as a topping. I also sometimes buy a package of Brownberry multi grain sandwich thins and will have maybe a couple a month if I want a cheesy sloppy burger.

“It’s the carbs man.”

Completely agree. The problem, now, is that the Globalists are DEMANDING that the West stop eating meat and are now DRASTICALLY driving up the price of meat in order to achieve that end.

So what’s left? Carbs and protein, but if meat is out, not even much protein, so we’re left with mostly carbs.

Bottom line, expect the attacks on meat to INTENSIFY, particularly as people find out that eating meat, instead of carbs, is the easiest way for one to greatly improve their health.

Like it or not, we’re in a death-struggle with this bunch. They have to be defeated and I’ll take any help we can get, from any country.
