Ok maybe it is just me and I am imagining things. Anyone who has been running searches on the internet for the last 20 years or so has probably noticed how difficult it has gotten to get concise and accurate results. Even boolean operators are no help. Lately I have noticed another thing. Every time I search for a news article almost all the returns I get are for links to a mainstream media article. Little or nothing from alternative sources. The other thing is that if you search for something even slightly untoward about almost any progressive or out...

Elena Bunina, a Russian-Jew who in recent years headed top Russian tech company Yandex, has stepped down as the firm’s CEO and has moved to Israel due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to media reports. Last week, Reuters reported that Bunina has decided to step down as chief executive of Yandex LLC, Russia’s largest tech company that has been dubbed “Russia’s Google,” two weeks before her tenure was set to expire. The report did not specify the reasons behind Bunina’s sudden departure from the company, where she had served as CEO since 2017. Following her departure from Russia,...

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov on Monday called a draft law on limiting foreign ownership in major Russian information technology companies to 20% "destructive". "The competitiveness of the Russian economy is largely determined by the competitiveness of our companies," Akimov said in a statement. "And this draft bill undermines stability and competitiveness of the companies, giving all tech market players wrong signals." The draft bill was submitted to the State Duma on Friday. Shares in Yandex, known as Russia's Google, were up 3.6% in New York after Akimov's statement.

You might have heard of DuckDuckGo in the past. Our first long post about it was back in 2016 with Rebecca Sentance trying out the new search engine for a week. Three years later, many things have changed. More users are losing trust in big tech companies and privacy and security are more important than ever. How does DuckDuckGo fit in this change? And how is the experience of switching into a new search engine nowadays? Over the last few months, DuckDuckGo has seen increased media coverage. Its growing stats among a growing conversation around online privacy make it more...

Yandex spokesman Ilya Grabovsky said that some Internet users contacted the company Wednesday to say that its public search engine was yielding what looked like personal Google files. Russian social media users started posting scores of such documents, including an internal memo from a Russian bank, press summaries and company business plans. Grabovsky said Yandex has alerted Google to the concerns. It was unclear...

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin on Thursday called the Internet a CIA project and made comments about Russia’s biggest search engine Yandex, sending the company’s shares plummeting. The Kremlin has been anxious to exert greater control over the Internet, which opposition activists — barred from national television — have used to promote their ideas and organize protests. Russia’s parliament this week passed a law requiring social media websites to keep their servers in Russia and save all information about their users for at least half a year.
